How would you feel if you had over a month of progress in one of the hardest games ever taken away from you in the blink of an eye?

Some Escape From Tarkov players have unfortunately become experts at answering that question, as a wave of malicious account resets has swept over the community.

Social media tags and boards related to Escape From Tarkov have been flooded with reports of wiped accounts, and streamers have been hit particularly hard by this.

The Mystery Wipes Hit Tarkov

Escape From Tarkov Gives Out Free Rare Loot But It Has One Hilarious Catch

Most affected players discovered this tragic Boxing Day surprise when opening Escape From Tarkov. Instead of their profile, they were met with the usual prompt to choose a faction, a nickname, and a character model.

The source of the account reset appears to be a site vulnerability that allows a third party to wipe accounts and change details even in cases where the owner has two-factor authentication active.

Falling Skies is part of the game's main storyline, and features the first big choice you have to make in the game.

To make matters worse, at the time of writing, changing one's password does not log the malicious party out of the account.

The only reliable solution at present seems to be to contact the BattleState Game's support and ask for your account to be locked, then log in again with new credentials.

Streamers Sniped Hardest

Although the vulnerability is not selective about its victims, the main targets in this wave of resets have been streamers.

Popular names like DrLupo have lost their account progress today, with BAXBEAST being hurt especially hard due to the hack.

According to a social media post, BAXBEAST lost a level 53 account on the brink of Prestige 5, and with the For Humanity ending in the bag.

Considering how time-consuming the new main story is in Escape From Tarkov, it's no surprise that the lost progress is causing a lot of grief.

Creator and Tarkov resource curator LogicalSolutions, who has also been hit by a wipe, says BattleState Games is aware of the issue.

It is unclear whether the lost progress can be recovered. If not, that would be one unceremonious way to escape from Tarkov.

Escape From Tarkov is available on Steam and via the BattleState Games website.
