Escape From Tarkov Gives Out Free Rare Loot But It Has One Hilarious Catch

Covering the video games industry since 2017, with experience in news, articles, lists, and reviews (and I blame The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask for that).

If you are a fan of RPGs and want a third-person version: Tayná Garcia is a Brazilian journalist who ended up working with video games after finishing Zelda: Majora's Mask when she was a kid. With more than eight years of experience in the segment, she has been an assistant editor at Jovem Nerd and is currently a contributor at DualShockers and a writer for gaming magazines for Editora Europa. Oh, and she may like Hideo Kojima a bit too much.

Escape From Tarkov is finally out after about eight years in Early Access, but it seems that the surprises for players haven't totally ended just yet!

In fact, Battlestate Games Studio Head and Director Nikita Buyanov decided to kick off the weekend by giving the community a special bundle – that ended up being a hilarious prank on players.

High-Tier Loot Teased For A Special Promo

Tarkov players woke up last Sunday to a genuine surprise when Buyanov teased a “special promo” on his X account (formerly Twitter), accompanied by an image showing some seriously top-tier, rare gear.

We are talking about THICC cases, an Altyn helmet, a FLIR optic, and piles of gleaming Bitcoins – so, naturally, everyone’s attention was caught by that unexpected, supposedly upcoming offer.

The most hardcore shooter of all time is finally out, but was the wait worth it?

However, shortly after the mysterious tease, Buyanov revealed that it was actually a brilliant and hilarious prank. He retweeted himself, confirming that the code in question was titled “PAY2WIN”, which made everyone suspect that something was wrong.

You can check the thread right below:

Then, when players finally redeemed the code, there was no Altyn helmet, nor piles of Bitcoins. Instead, they received one of the weakest and most useless combinations of items in Tarkov history, which included a toy gun, twelve DualSabot slugs, and Croutons.

The full bundle list, which provides more comedic value than actual combat utility, included:

  • 12x DualSabot
  • Fuze
  • GP coin
  • Croutons
  • TK FAST MT (helmet)
  • T-Bag
  • TOZ-106 (bolt-action shotgun)
  • Blicky (toy gun)

Despite the complete lack of useful gear, the majority of players loved Buyanov’s joke, viewing it as a humorous take on the community's own long-running jokes about Escape From Tarkov being a “pay-to-win” game. By the end, it is a friendly reminder that in Tarkov, skill is always the currency that matters the most, right?

The long-awaited full 1.0 version of Escape From Tarkov officially dropped on November 15th for PC (via Steam), and it seems that some additional DLC and post-launch content are already on their way.
