It's been six months since hardcore extraction shooter Escape From Tarkov left its seemingly eternal early access period. Compared to the turbulent development, the game has enjoyed a lull since November. As summer rolls in, however, the Russian developers decided it's time to break the ice. Literally, that is.

Today, Escape From Tarkov has gotten its first major post-launch content drop, in the form of a story chapter, a brand new map, and some much-needed quality of life features that may actually make the questing experience not feel like a chore for the first time.

Surviving in Escape From Tarkov is all about skill, and knowing how to make the best out of bad gear is essential.

Update 1.0.5.0 also marks the first content release since the departure of lead game designer Jean Tyulegenov earlier this month. It's unclear whether this update was developed while he was still active in the company, but it marks the beginning of a new era for Battlestate Games.

Escape From Tarkov 1.0.5.0 Features New Map

Escape From Tarkov Icebreaker

Today's update for Escape From Tarkov leads with the introduction of a new in-game event, Icebreaker.

The event is centered around the Paradigm Shipping icebreaker that ended up trapped inside the Tarkov blockade, and is a PvE experience regardless of the game mode you are in. There is no matchmaking at play here, though you can enter the Icebreaker map as a squad of up to three members.

To pair up with the temporary event, the main story of Escape From Tarkov is also getting a new story chapter set around the icebreaker. If the chapter name Boreas sounds familiar to you, that's no coincidence.

Boreas is a reference to the Half-Life 2 icebreaker Borealis, introduced in Half-Life 2: Episode One. In that game's lore, the ship is involved in secretive teleportation research, and this leads to its stranding in a remote location... like a blockaded Tarkov.

To help set the scene, the Icebreaker map is home to a new faction called The Wedge. This is a clear reference to Half-Life's Combine, complete with H&K guns and all-black fits, and a new boss.

There are two ways to start the Boreas quest line. If you are in the late game in your save, head to your hideout and interact with the Intelligence Center (level 3 is required) in order to receive the distress signal from the icebreaker.

Alternatively, you can also trigger this story chapter by finding one of the Paradigm Shipping posters. Spawns for this item are dynamic, and you can find them in walls all around the maps of Tarkov. Urban areas like Customs and Streets of Tarkov have more poster spawns than remote maps like Woods or Lighthouse.

New Players Can Actually Complete Quests Alone

If you're too new to worry about fighting the off-brand Combine in some icebreaker, this Escape From Tarkov update also has something for you.

User-friendliness has long been one of the biggest issues in the game, one that is decidedly not helped by community gatekeeping and a proud 'hardcore game' reputation. In this update, Escape From Tarkov fixes two major issues that frequently turn new players away from the game.

Quests have long been one of the weakest links in this otherwise excellent extraction shooter, and a major part of that is because the game frequently sends you to look for minuscule things in huge maps with next to no guidance. When you combine this design with an unforgiving, murderous atmosphere, the result is that most people just search for a walkthrough right away instead of exploring.

To alleviate that somewhat, the current patch has added an "expanded directional indicator" that points players in the right direction once they are in the vicinity of items required for tasks. It won't make fetch quests any less formulaic, but at least you spend less time sniffing the floor looking for a USB drive while getting shot at.

Quests have long been one of the weakest links in this otherwise excellent extraction shooter

Since this is an extraction shooter we're talking about, there is also a new feature to make certain extracts less obtuse. Most maps in Escape From Tarkov have flare extracts that require you to stand in a special area, then pop a green flare into the sky to clear the area of snipers before exiting. It sounds simple in theory, but there was no indication whether you did it right or not, and a lot of times that led to running straight into a bullet on your way out.

Starting with update 1.0.5.0, a correctly-launched flare now gets a green flare in response from the boundary snipers, so you know whether it's safe to cross or not. My mental health will greatly benefit from this, given the amount of raids wasted by poor flare launches in the past.

As a sacrifice for making your life a little bit easier, Battlestate Games has compensated by adding new streamer items, so you now have even more trinkets to find if you want to unlock the mythical Kappa container.

Escape From Tarkov is currently available on Steam and on the game's official website. You can find the full 1.0.5.0 patch notes here.
