The Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise is returning, only this time, there's a new creator in town, as Yoko Taro of Nier fame is penning the new project, rather than Hideaki Anno.

Neon Genesis started out as a bizarre anime franchise in which teenagers had to use giant mecha suits to fight strange alien lifeforms. The series became famous for the psychological dissections of its characters, its examination of depression, and a truly strange final episode, which left tons of unanswered questions. It would later become a full multimedia franchise, including games, movies, merch, and a full revival.

In a surprise announcement shared on Crunchyroll, a new Evangelion franchise has entered development. It's unclear what form this franchise will take, but its writer has been revealed, and they're an oddly perfect choice.

Announced at a 30th anniversary event in Yokohama, a new Evangelion series is being produced by Studio Khara and CloverWorks. The project will be helmed by Kazuya Tsurumaki of the previous Evangelion movies, but the writer is Yoko Taro, who is best known for his work on the Nier and Drakengard franchises.

While Taro is best known for his work on video games, his creations tend to be filled with mind-screws and bizarre endings. Which, frankly, makes him the ideal candidate for Evangelion.

The question now is what form this new Evangelion will take? While it started out as a TV show, Evangelion has consisted of movies for a long time now. It's also unclear whether this new franchise will be connected to the original Evangelion, the Rebuild series, or will be a new entity entirely.

Whatever the case, it's exciting to see more Evangelion content, even without Anno's involvement. The setting is ideal for expansion, and as the numerous Evangelion fanworks over the years have proven, there is a ton of scope to dig even deeper into Shinji's psyche and make him suffer even more.
