Whenever an iconic developer who has been shaping our childhood memories for over four decades is mentioned in corporate restructuring news, the community immediately braces for the worst. So, if you are a fan of the Super Mario Bros. franchise, your heart probably skipped a beat or two over the last few weeks following the announcement that Takashi Tezuka, one of the most critical figures in gaming history alongside Shigeru Miyamoto, would be leaving his position.

Mario will never end, as long as Nintendo has something to say about it.

However, fortunately, a wave of collective anxiety among Nintendo enthusiasts (myself included) has just come to a very reassuring end, since it looks like the legendary designer is not actually leaving the Japanese company.

Just a New Role for a Gaming Icon

The much-needed clarification came directly during Nintendo’s recent annual shareholder meeting on Thursday, June 25, 2026 – with credit to VGC for the translated breakdown.

Back in May, initial corporate reports revealed that Takashi Tezuka would be leaving his position as executive director at the end of his current term. Naturally, many fans jumped to immediate, panicked conclusions, assuming that the designer was ready to completely hang up his hat and walk away into a peaceful (and deserved, of course) retirement.

However, Nintendo was incredibly quick to bring everyone back to earth, confirming now that Tezuka will remain highly active within the studio, just under a brand-new role.

So, instead of exiting the building completely, Tezuka will transition into the position of Production Producer, a role where he will continue to directly oversee game development. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa reportedly confirmed this long-term arrangement during the meeting.

Taking the microphone himself for a minute, Tezuka addressed the shareholders with an incredibly heartfelt speech, reflecting on how much the medium has evolved since he first walked through the company's doors back in 1984.

"Looking back at the past 42 years, I can honestly say it was a wonderful and enjoyable career," Tezuka shared during the meeting. "In the beginning, we were hand-creating new types of fun that you couldn't find in toy stores. Today, game development has grown to a much larger scale, and there is a different kind of joy in creating things together with so many people."

He goes on and continues to praise and express gratitude for his time at Nintendo, highlighting how the Japanese company always aims to deliver products that bring true joy to people all around the world within a workspace that thrives on flexibility and teamwork. “I truly feel that working for this company was the right choice. Going forward, I will continue to be involved as a production producer. Thank you for providing me with this opportunity to say a few words,” he concluded, in a heartwarming message that has certainly left Super Mario Bros. fans breathing a sigh of relief.

In the end, by moving away from corporate executive duties and focusing entirely on a hands-on production loop, it seems that Tezuka is clearly setting himself up to do what he loves most without the administrative side of the whole thing. I have to say that, personally, I’m definitely excited to see what he brings to the table next in this new role, especially since it proves that even after four decades, the passion to create pure digital joy never truly fades.
