It's an open-world world, we're all just living in it. That sentence may sound a bit stupid, but it's true. Ever since video games were first made, we have been always trying to make these interactive experiences more lived-in and livable. A breathing world is always the high point of immersion. Over the years, games like Grand Theft Auto and Assassin's Creed have been pushing us closer to that point. I feel like the must-plays of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Elden Ring have caused an open-world boom we're still feeling today.
10 Best Open World Games for Beginners
We all start somewhere — and these open world games are great starting points for players interested in pure exploration.
I say this because, wow, there are a lot of open-world and open-zone games headed your way this year, even after the halfway point. Go ahead and have a look and see what you want to pick up, but just think about your backlog before buying another 24-plus hour commitment.
16 Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced
July 9, 2026
Back in 2013, Assassin's Creed Black Flag released to considerable praise from critics. It was seen as a return to form for the Assassin's Creed franchise, with fans still considering the game's character development and general combat the best of the series. It makes perfect sense that now, thirteen years later, Ubisoft has elected to remake the entire game. The game already looks like a stunning return to form for the original return to form, which has plenty of fans excited that it's only so far away.
For any hyped-up incoming release, there's a lot riding on it, but that's even more prominent with Black Flag Resycned. A lot of fans like how this ship is shaping up, so many are praying that the final product will be pretty good and worth their money. If it is, there's hope that the original Assassin's Creed games will get the same treatment. Time will tell, but it's really hard to see this game being anything but a fun experience for those waiting for it.
15 Big Walk
August 4, 2026
If you liked being a goose in Untitled Goose Game, honking at people, and causing general mayhem, there's another game from developers House House on the way. Except it's multiplayer. And calmer. And it's more about discovery than chaos, but we all know how multiplayer games go. This game is Big Walk, and it aims to take you and however many friends you want on a journey full of exploration that'll teach you new ways of how to communicate with each other.
I can definitely see Big Walk becoming another prominent game for creators and players like PEAK was. Whether it ends up being as soft-spoken as the devs have aimed it to be or just another title to lose your mind with your friends in will have to be seen when it launches. At the very least, there's plenty of heart behind it and likely a lot to discover, so it's already standing out above all the other multiplayer games out today with its personality, heart, and talent.
14 The Blood of Dawnwalker
September 3, 2026
This game may have the potential to be one of the big hitters with open-world fans in 2026. The dawnwalker in the title is a man named Coen, who you play as. As the dawnwalker, you go through your days like a human, and go through your nights as a vampire.
Both of these day and night control schemes feel very different from each other, with one focusing on swordplay and the other merging melee and supernatural parkour. Day and night changes when you unlock new perks, and progression relies on how fast you can accomplish tasks in a number of days. It may feel reminiscent of The Witcher, and that's because plenty of old Witcher developers, like Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, are headlining it as part of their new studio Rebel Wolves.
As a result, there's plenty of promise behind The Blood of Dawnwalker, as well as familiarity that can back it up. It's definitely worth keeping your eyes on as a fan of the genre.
13 Valheim
Leaving Early Access September 9, 2026
Speaking of tons of content, Valheim is leaving early access later this year. It's an open-world survival game you can play with friends, crafting and making an entire procedurally generated world your own.
The procedurally generated part of the game does a lot of heavy lifting in its current form, but a lot of people don't seem to mind. I certainly don't. Valheim is a great game to escape into when most games fight for your attention with live service events or microtransactions. Like many other games, Valheim plans to ring in the early access exit with a ton of content to jump into, including the brand-new Deep North biome. There's no better time to jump in than with a fresh new 1.0 launch.
12 RuneScape: Dragonwilds
September 15, 2026
Where Final Fantasy XIV debatably has the plethora of other Final Fantasy games as its companions, RuneScape is doing the same by having a spin-off on the way. As on the way as you can get with it being in early access, at least. RuneScape: Dragonwilds takes place on the forgotten continent of Ashenfall, turning the classic medieval adventure game into one about survival.
Like I said, Dragonwilds has been in early access for the last year. It's on track to be launched as 1.0 in September. The developers have been updating the game frequently, so if you want to join in the fun, you better do it now. Or, of course, wait for the big day in September. Whichever excites you the most.
11 Hot Wheels Infinite Rush
September 24, 2026
This is most likely the weirdest open-world game coming out this year, but I do mean that as affectionately as I can. Hot Wheels Infinite Rush is basically Grand Theft Auto but with Hot Wheels cars. You can drive around an entire city as the exact car you want with Hot Wheels play sets serving as specific landmarks around the city. It really nails the vibe of being playful while still offering breakneck experiences most people desire with a game like this. It has the potential to really be something special.
Hot Wheels Infinite Rush is described as being open-world, but it does state that there are four islands with a boss to defeat, so it might just be a massively open-zone experience. We'll have to see when it arrives, but it does offer plenty of content by promising over 150 different cars and even a track builder to customize the islands as you see fit. With features like this, it certainly lives up to the "infinite" part of its name.
10 Aion 2
Aiming for Worldwide Release in September 2026
Aion is one of the more niche MMOs out there, but it's an impressive diamond in the rough. It stood out from the crowd back in 2008 by allowing players to freely explore and battle in the air instead of keeping them permanently on the ground. Its sequel, Aion 2, promises to be bigger and better than before with an open-world while keeping its characteristic flight intact.
10 Games That Make Exploration Feel Genuinely Dangerous
Exploring in these 10 open-world and survival games is exceptionally dangerous compared to most other titles.
North American players, alongside many other fans in different regions, will be able to experience Aion 2 when it launches globally in September of this year. Unfortunately, though, it seems Aion 2 doesn't meet its lofty expectations according to thoughts shared by the players who got to take part in a soft launch. According to them, the open-world feels like it has lost its identity in trying to replicate the lightning-in-a-bottle of Genshin Impact, and the leveling being tied to the story makes the game feel much more restricted than promised. The developers have also disclosed that there are generative AI assets in Aion 2, which just adds insult to injury.
9 Grand Theft Auto VI
November 19, 2026
In case you were wondering why so many open-world games have September release dates, this behemoth is why. Grand Theft Auto VI seems to be set to finally grace our screens this November. There are only just a few months before players get to play as Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos as they handle a conspiracy that could crack Vice City wide open if it doesn't kill them first.
Grand Theft Auto has been allowing players to do literally whatever they want in its open-world environments for decades, and that's not going to stop at GTA6. It's because of this experience and credibility that those who have been waiting for this game have cleared their schedules in November just to dedicate themselves to it for a while. Everyone who isn't playing is preparing for the cultural shock wave that'll follow with its release. Hopefully, after the wait and the problems it's created for itself leading up to the big day, we'll have a game worth it all.
8 Aniimo
Aiming for Q3 2026
In a world with Digimon, Pokémon, and Palworld, of course we need a MiiHoYo-esque critter catcher. It might seem harsh, but that's really the best way to describe Aniimo. It aims to be a free-to-play, open-world, creature-catching RPG. Seems like a lot of buzzwords, but that's actually what it's shaping up to be. The graphics, creatures, and world look gorgeous from what developers Pawprint Studio have shared so far, so Aniimo seems to be one gigantic market-changer if I've ever seen one.
That said, I feel like Aniimo is one of those classic examples of "too good to be true." The game looks too good. My steak is just too buttery, and it's making me question what went into it. The catch might already be written in the game's advertising — it's free-to-play. That means there will likely be some sort of microtransaction element involved, much like another similar market-changing game before it: Genshin Impact. We'll just have to wait and see how Aniimo shakes out when it launches, if it makes its 2026 release window.
7 Mortal Shell II
Aiming For 2026
Another anticipated open-world game aiming to come out this year is Mortal Shell II. For those unfamiliar, Mortal Shell is an action-RPG that takes place in a world being conquered by rot. The people who came before you carry a small piece of their hope. You can use that hope to possess and wield their power, opening the game up to many different builds and playstyles.
The sequel promises to expand on this combat to once again challenge its players. As unique as the whole thing is, the original Mortal Shell ended up being rather mixed in terms of its reviews. It remains to be seen if Mortal Shell II can bring this Soulslike to new heights, or if it'll be only moderately better than the original. At the very least, Mortal Shell has a bit of a cult following with the people who do enjoy it, so the game will likely please them above all else.
