Fable release date won't be delayed for GTA 6, Playground Games devs say

We're just four months into 2026, but the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 on Nov. 19 is already casting a long shadow over the video game release calendar in the latter months of the year. Understandably, few developers are eager to release their projects anywhere near GTA 6, which is one of the most anticipated games of all time. In an X post on April 13, the team at Playground Games seemingly swatted aside recent rumors that the game had been delayed.

"We're excited to welcome you to Albion in Autumn 2026!" the post reads, in response to an X user's enthusiastic reaction to a Fable teaser. (The account's bio also reads: "Fable is coming Autumn 2026.") The post comes after journalist Jeff Grubb said on Giant Bomb's Game Mess Mornings that “I've heard that Fable has been pushed internally. That doesn't mean that it's coming out next year. Apparently, they're still trying to get it out this year, but they are worried about the launch of GTA 6. And so, if it's getting delayed beyond the release of GTA 6, that could push it into December, which might make it a prime candidate to get delayed into 2027.”

To be clear: this doesn't mean that Grubb is wrong. After all, "internal delays" are just delays that a studio hasn't announced to the public. And a fall/autumn release window means that Playground Games can technically release Fable anytime between Sept. 22 and Dec. 21. Launching in late September gives Playground just under two months before GTA 6, but something like late October or early November starts to feel more dicey.

Also, Grubb's right to suggest that a December release is less likely, because it's less desirable for both Playground and Xbox. A December launch would put Fable out of contention for The Game Awards in 2026, and missing out on several weeks of potential holiday sales in November isn't ideal from a business perspective. Even GTA 6 will only narrowly make the cutoff for The Game Awards voting this year — the game is slated to come out just one day before the 2026 eligibility window closes.
