Bilibili's highly anticipated original series finally has an August release date
Image: BilibiliAfter what feels like years of waiting, one of the most anticipated original Chinese animation — or donghua — projects finally has a release date. False Memory (also known as Memory Management Bureau) just received a new trailer that also confirms the series will premiere on Bilibili in China and YouTube globally starting August 2. For animation fans who've been following the project since its indie short film days, the official three-episode debut is a long time coming.
The new trailer leans into everything that made the original cult project stand out, offering a beautiful blend of striking action animation and surreal visuals. Even in an era where donghua is growing increasingly popular, False Memory has managed to maintain an almost mythical reputation among animation fans who have been waiting years to see the story expanded into a full series, much akin to other creator-led original works like Atsuya Uki’s Cencoroll and Yasuomi Umetsu’s Virgin Punk.
The donghua project began as an independent 18-minute animated short by creators Li Shuyu and Liu Wenyu at Flint Sugar. The film follows a grieving boy who manifests his deceased friend within his memories, drawing the attention of mysterious "memory collectors" tasked with restoring order, which results in a coming-of-age story wrapped in an intriguing sci-fi premise built out like a fever dream.
Upon its debut, the original short quickly attracted attention for delivering a level of animation quality that felt far beyond what most viewers expected out of an indie production. The short's combination of emotional storytelling and ambitious action sequences, which feel like a beautiful blend of FLCL and Sonny Boy, helped build a devoted following, with fans regularly checking for updates as the creators worked toward a full series.
Rather than handing the concept off to another studio, Li and Liu are directing the series themselves alongside production partners Flint Sugar, Studio Tumble, and Bilibili. That continuity is a big reason why longtime fans have remained invested throughout the lengthy development process and, judging by the new trailer, the wait was absolutely worth it. Animation quality is always difficult to judge from promotional footage alone, but False Memory continues to look every bit as ambitious as the original short.
Although the series is launching on Bilibili in China, episodes will also be distributed through the Made by Bilibili YouTube channel, which is common for the platform. Paying members of the YouTube channel will receive episodes early before they become available to viewers after a delay, usually a week or two later, which means you'll likely only need to pay if you want to see episodes immediately and avoid spoilers. Everyone else can simply wait and watch False Memory for free without any constraints.
The anticipation for the new series is already at a fever pitch, but we'll find out if it lives up to the hype when False Memory premieres on August 2. Soon we'll finally get to see what its creators can do with an entire series, and it’s already shaping up to be one of the slickest anime of the year.
