Far Far West is an interesting Co-Op FPS game that simulates extraction-shooter games like Helldivers 2. It's simplistic on the surface, but once you start diving a little deeper, it can get pretty complicated.
With plenty of secrets hidden around, like the cacti quest, you'll have tons of hours' worth of fun awaiting you. If you feel a little overwhelmed after the first couple of runs, you aren't alone.
This beginner's guide should give you all the information you need to find success in this wild western game. It'll break down the basics of what you can do with spells, guns, and missions, but beyond that, the game is a lot of fun to discover on your own.
A Beginner's Guide to Far Far West
This wild western co-op game takes some inspiration from games like Deep Rock Galactic and Helldivers, so if you've played those, you'll have a solid understanding of the basics. If you haven't played those, don't worry too much; there is a lot of depth here, but you can get the hang of things pretty easily.
We'll break it down into a few categories to make it a bit more digestible. There are three major aspects of the game that you'll need to know about: Spells, Weapons, and Missions.
Spells: Making a Big Boom
Would it really be a robotic western without a little magic? Yes, probably, but Far Far West doesn't care. In this game, you're able to equip up to three different spells before each mission.
In total, there are five categories of spells to choose from:
- Pyro
- Electric
- Acid
- Voodoo
- Cactus
Each category has five different spells for players to use on their missions, but you'll need to unlock the later spells by gaining experience. Seems simple, right? Well, there are a few stipulations to that.
You'll only receive experience based on how often you use those spells during a mission. For example, if you use a powerful Pyro spell a lot during a mission, you'll get a ton of Pyro experience.
Spells don't just cause big damage and get lots of kills, though; they can also be combined to create something greater. There's a ton of combinations out there for every spell to keep things interesting.
The easiest way to see this is to head to the shooting range in the Saloon. Here you can test out the spells you have and see how they interact. Once you've got a feel for them, you'll be on the right path to becoming a legend.
10 Xbox Co-Op Games That Reward Exploration
The original Xbox was full of worlds to explore with a friend.
Weapons: Becoming a Gunslinger
It wouldn't be a very good cowboy game if you couldn't shoot a few walking skeletons along the way. The game has a good number of weapons in it already, with the promise of more on the way.
These weapons come in one of two forms: Primary and Secondary. You can equip one of each before heading out on a mission, and you'll want to plan well, given how some weapons interact a bit better with certain spells.
For Primary guns, you have one of five choices:
- Quad Cylinder
- Shotgun
- Long Ranger
- Minigun
- Leveredge
For Secondary guns, you have another five choices:
- Revolver
- Bow
- Dual Revolvers
- Boomerang
- Sheriff Stars
Realistically, you can pick whichever suits your style the best, but when you start, you'll have the Quad Cylinder and the Revolver as your weapons. To unlock the other weapons, you'll need to track their fragments in the weapon menu to find them in the world.
These fragments can be found in a few places while you're out and about on missions. There are Forges, Loot Goblins, and Bosses. Whenever you kill or complete one of these objectives, you'll be rewarded with a fragment piece.
You'll still need plenty of gold to buy them once you collect enough fragments, and you're going to need a whole lot of gold. Not only can you buy the new weapons, but you can also upgrade them with Joker cards using Souls and increase their stats with gold.
You can always refund some gold spent to put the points into other categories.
Hero Customization: Making the Wild West Your Own
Now this is where things start to get even more interesting. You can actually upgrade individual stats on your character for gold as you level up, and apply Jokers in the same way you did with guns.
There is a slight caveat here, that most of the upgrades are significantly more expensive than they were with guns. They are refundable in the same way, but they do get increasingly expensive.
These upgrades can help you tweak your build to suit whatever playstyle you want. If you like jumping around, try snagging a Joker that makes you do more damage while in the air and increasing your jump height in customization.
There are a lot of ways to really get down in the weeds with builds, so you'll want to make sure you experiment before taking on the harder difficulties. You're almost ready to go, cowboy.
Missions: Getting the Hang of Things
Now we've arrived at the most important section of our guide. This one will tell you how to actually play the game and hopefully be successful, although that part is up to you and your skills.
Missions work the same way most co-op games of this style do; you'll choose a mission and a difficulty before being carted off to complete it. The harder the mission, the more rewards you can earn. In every mission, you'll complete one singular objective with three parts: the setup, the boss, and the extraction.
It's not hard to see on the map itself since you'll have a nice line to follow from objective to objective. Other objectives do spawn around the map, and it would behoove you to complete them for bonuses like Souls and gold.
Technically speaking, each mission has two parts that get rolled at random: an objective and a boss. There doesn't seem to be anything linking certain objectives to certain bosses, since you can get any boss with any objective.
Objectives are things like crafting a gas bomb or escorting a wagon of TNT to the boss area. Each boss is annoying in a different way, so if you're running something close range, you probably don't want to take on the flying boss.
When you kill enemies or complete some side objectives, Jokers may spawn for you and your team to pick up. These will only last for the rest of the mission, so grabbing them all the time isn't a bad idea.
While you're out on the various maps, you might find some secret quests like the Bell quest, which you can complete to unlock free Jokers and increase your arsenal. There is also a single NPC marked on most maps that offers a quest line to unlock something of value.
There's an awful lot to do on these maps, but don't forget you're never alone; you've got your faithful robot horse there to help you out and help you dash around the map at a moment's notice.
Tips and Tricks to Success in the Wild West
Now that you understand the basics, here are some tips and tricks to make sure you find the success you're after in this weirdly western world. None of these is gospel, so take them with a grain of salt and find your own way to play.
- Do Everything — Any objectives available on the map to complete will reward you with XP, gold, or Souls, so it's worth completing everything if you can.
- Bail When You Need To — You won't receive most bonuses if you fail a mission, so make sure you're not overextending yourself before finishing the main objective.
- Make It Rain — Gold isn't uncommon, but you'll go through it quickly. Any time you find a gold rock to mine, you should mine it. This will give you a good store of gold.
- Use the Shooting Range — Testing some items out in the shooting range is a great idea. It'll let you understand how some things interact without being locked into it.
- Be Flexible — Give everything you can a shot. Even if there's something you aren't fond of, try to mix it with something else to see some explosive results.
- Run Away — Sometimes a cowboy can get overrun. Don't be afraid to hop on your horse and outrun the hordes to get to safety. Survival is key.
- Open Your Heart and Party — It seems like most cowpolk are willing to help out, and if you're heading out solo, leave the party open, so they can join in. It doesn't do any harm to get a little help.
These won't help you get much better at the game if you aren't willing to practice. This FPS game is fast-paced and fun, but it'll take a bit of learning to get the hang of everything on offer, so don't be afraid to try.
