As Final Fantasy 14's main version gears up for the Evercold expansion, Final Fantasy 14 Mobile has announced that the planned global release has been canceled, and the currently active Chinese servers will be shutting down, bringing the FF14 mobile experience to an end before it can even reach its full potential.
LightSpeed Studios, the team behind FF14 Mobile, announced on the official game website that the game servers will be shutting down on September 30, and therefore the global release won't be happening. According to the announcement, this change of plans is due to changes in business operations and the current market environment for gaming. As a result, LightSpeed's licensing agreement with Tencent that allowed the team to produce the mobile version of FF14 is being terminated.
The end of service for servers that are currently live will be staggered, and the schedule starts July 17 at 18:00 (UTC+8) with the end of top-ups and new user registration. Next, the operations officially shut down on September 30 at 11:00 (UTC+8). Finally, the forums and customer support services end on October 15 at 11:00 (UTC+8).
Final Fantasy 14's Full Version is Alone Again
Since the mobile version of FF14 has only been available in China, players living elsewhere are largely unaffected by this news. However, it's unfortunate that players looking forward to trying the mobile version will no longer get the chance to do so, with the global release being canceled.
I'm among the many players of the main FF14 version, and I have only one request for LightSpeed and Square Enix with the news of this shift in plans. Please make the mobile-exclusive customization options available in the main game now that the mobile game is shutting down.
This change of plans is due to changes in business operations and the current market environment for gaming.
Mobile-exclusive content includes hairstyles and additional dye channels that aren't available in the main game, which then gave players on the mobile version a lot more options when it came to customizing their characters that we don't have in the main game. Some of those hairstyles were really cute, so I need them to be available in-game or at least through the online store.
Other exclusive content includes penguin-themed items you can get from events, which is characteristic of Tencent games, and a gacha feature that could give you a hoverboard mount as well as various mount skins. While I don't want to see the gacha elements added, I do want the customization options brought to the main game, as it would be a shame to leave them in a version of the game that's being shut down.
The Original Final Fantasy 14 Continues Going Strong
Dawntrail might've received a lot of criticism, but FF14 overall has a strong reputation, and it's not showing any signs of ending anytime soon. The beastmaster job is set to arrive in the fall, and Evercold—the next expansion—is scheduled to be released in early 2027. That, combined with thousands of hours that you can spend on currently available content, means that players of the mobile version don't have to say goodbye to the IP entirely, since there's a whole world in the main version waiting to be explored.
If you don't want to commit to a subscription, FF14 has a free trial that gives you unlimited playtime, the ability to reach level 80, and access to A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, Stormblood, and Shadowbringers. By then, you definitely know if you want to commit to purchasing a subscription and pick up the only expansions not included in the trial: Endwalker and Dawntrail.
Live service games have had a difficult time in recent years, and some of them have only managed to survive for a matter of weeks before shutting down. FF14 mobile managed to survive for over a year, and the cancellation ended up being due to business and market shifts ending the licensing agreement rather than lack of players. On the bright side, the mobile players are more than welcome to join me and all the other Warriors of Light playing the full Final Fantasy 14.
