The release of the last entry in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy is nigh, as the Director has confirmed that the game is in a playable state.

Square Enix fans who tuned in to the February 2026 Sony State of Play were left disappointed, especially after many had been expecting to see the next Final Fantasy 7 Remake. The developers have been vocal about how well the game's development has been progressing, hinting that it's getting ready for release.

Final Fantasy 7 could have turned out far different.

In an interview with Automaton, Director Naoki Hamaguchi discussed the production of the still-unnamed final entry in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy. The game is now playable, though it's still being refined, and requires a little more work before it's ready. Hamaguchi believes it's soon time to reveal more about the game.

The positive news about the next Final Fantasy 7 Remake raises questions about when the game will be officially revealed and when it's coming out.

In terms of announcement, it'll probably be shown at Summer Games Fest 2026, unless Square Enix decides to host a dedicated event. It's unlikely to appear at a Sony State of Play or Nintendo Direct, considering the game is confirmed to be multiplatform.

The game is already in a playable state, and right now, we’re in the final push phase, refining and building up the experience.

In terms of release, there's a good chance it could launch in September 2027, as this marks the 30th anniversary of the original Final Fantasy 7. This gives the devs plenty of time to perfect the game while keeping it far from Grand Theft Auto 6.

In an age when so many games get delayed or canceled, it's great to see positivity from the developers of a highly anticipated title. Hopefully, all this development time allows Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 to stick the landing, especially as Rebirth stumbled with its ending.
