At Summer Game Fest 2022, we saw the world premiere of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Now, four years later, we have the world premiere of the conclusion of the Final Fantasy 7 trilogy.
After the game’s initial tease at the 2005 Electronic Entertainment Expo as a tech demo for the PlayStation 3, a modern-day Final Fantasy 7 remake jumped to the top of every JRPG fan’s wishlist.
That day finally came in 2020 with the then-exclusive PlayStation 4 game, Final Fantasy 7 Remake. There was just one problem: it was actually a remake of the game’s first five or so hours stretched razor thin. There were also hints of a changing timeline, with many wondering if we’d see the story change. Fans were a little anxious, to put it lightly. Thankfully, Rebirth hit the mark in 2024, and immediately left people wondering: when would the story conclude?
After several updates as of late, we finally have the concrete news we’ve been waiting for: Final Fantasy 7: Revelation will conclude the remake trilogy, release in Spring 2027, and be available on all platforms at launch.
Final Fantasy 7: Revelation is Final Fantasy 7 "Perfected"
I really cannot understate how controversial Remake was for some people. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth would right the ship and deliver one of the best games of 2024. The decision to make things open-world was, understandably, met with some skepticism, but Square Enix did a great job of pulling it off. It was a massive improvement over its predecessor in nearly every way.
Even better was that they nailed the balance between its mature storytelling and its more unserious, over-the-top moments. Yes, Cloud was still a little broody and worried about Sephiroth, but he had plenty of time to engage in nonsense as well. Now, with Revelation, we're entering the "thrilling conclusion" of the saga.
As expected, Vincent Valentine (voiced by Matt Mercer) was front and center during gameplay action, as it's finally time for him to join your party. He won't be alone, though, as Cid will also become a playable character. We'll also see a "perfected" combat system that combines real-time and turn-based combat.
There was honestly a lot to take in: you'll be able to set sail in the Highwind airship, visit iconic locales like Wutai, and even outfit your characters in special armor and equipment. It truly was a massive unveiling for one of the most anticipated games in development.
What Square Enix Needs to Do for Final Fantasy 17 to Be Successful
FF17 will probably be great, but here are some things that could help.
Final Fantasy 7: Revelation is Poised to be 2027’s Biggest Game
Director Naoki Hamaguchi came onto the stage as well to talk briefly about what we can expect. He mentioned that the central theme of the game is "resolve." Cloud and his companions confront their own destinies and must find their resolve on their way to the final battle.
While Final Fantasy 7 Revelations is technically the end of the story, there may be more to come. Hamaguchi recently said that so long as there is fan demand, we’ll see some DLC after the game releases. In fact, Hamaguchi also indicated that the team has never been afraid to do DLC; they just immediately focused on the third and final entry after Rebirth shipped.
They were also presumably focused on bringing Rebirth to other platforms, which happened when the game launched on Xbox and Nintendo Switch 2 June 3rd.
In other Final Fantasy news, Tifa Lockheart is coming to Street Fighter 6, so there's plenty for fans to look forward to beyond just the conclusion of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy.
