Final Fantasy 14 announced its next expansion, Evercold, last week, which is set to arrive in January 2026. Along with the announcement, developers Square Enix shared the first trailer for the upcoming expansion, revealing that players will be visiting the frozen wastes of The Fourth.
Coinciding with this announcement, the game just received its 7.5 patch, officially transitioning away from the golden city of Tural and setting up our next big adventure. Square Enix has confirmed we'll be getting one final main story patch in 7.56, which is set to release September 8, 2026, but the most recent string of quests has already set up why we'll be visiting The Fourth, and how we're going to get there.
Evercold seems primed to answer long-awaited questions fans have been asking since Endwalker, like how the worlds are responding to Zodiark and Hydaelyn's deaths, where are the remaining five Ascians we've yet to meet, and will Jonathan Bailey still voice G'Raha following his breakout role in Wicked? (Spoilers: He will!)
10 RPGs that Totally Reinvent Themselves Halfway Through
From Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Bloodborne, and Final Fantasy VI, these RPGs aren't afraid of major shakeups.
Of course, until we get more concrete details surrounding Evercold and its connection to the wider universe in Final Fantasy 14, we can only speculate on how all these plot threads will connect. But if you're looking to get caught up on the game and refresh your memory before diving back in, here's everything you'll need to know.
What is Evercold About?
Evercold is the upcoming eighth expansion for Final Fantasy 14, and it seems to be taking place primarily on The Fourth Reflection, a world that has been frozen over in ice, prompting its remaining people to flee to the skies. In civilizations' place, massive giants now roam the land instead, and are looking like another powerful foe we'll have to face. Fans are predicting that we'll be heading into this new world to help restore it, much like how we did in Shadowbringers.
Evercold seems primed to answer long-awaited questions fans have been asking since Endwalker.
From the trailer, we've already seen that Norse Mythology is a major inspiration for this upcoming expansion. We can already see the Dreki Norse longships throughout the trailer, with plenty of architecture referencing this design as well. In a brief shot, we see an Au'Ra man with only one eye, which could be a reference to this world's version of Odin as well.
Evercold will also feature two entirely new jobs unique to Final Fantasy 14. Fans speculate we may be getting Viking and Ranger-inspired jobs to fit with this world's theme. Although we won't have official confirmation on the first of these Jobs until the next FanFest in Berlin, Germany, on the 25th of July.
How Does Dawntrail Tie Into Evercold?
Image Via Square EnixDawntrail was pitched to the fanbase as a getaway expansion to help reset the world following the end of the story Square Enix had been setting up since A Realm Reborn. Although this holiday would come to a sudden end following the appearance of The Ninth Reflection emerging in Tural and the Endless waging war on its people.
Members from The Ninth would reveal that their world had been torn apart by a lightning-aspected calamity, forcing the survivors of the kingdom of Alexandria to use advanced technology to survive. As part of their survival, the citizens used "regulators" which managed their lifespans, storing the souls of the deceased to revive the living. They would also create the "Endless", who are ghost-like beings that stay in a virtual heaven dubbed the Living Memory.
10 JRPGs Where the Villain Feels More Compelling Than the Hero
We like these games' heroes, but there's something about their villains that sticks with us.
Interestingly enough, the opposite elemental aspect to lightning is ice, which may foreshadow that The Ninth and The Fourth may heal each other's worlds in some form.
As we would come to learn, the Ninth Reflection entered our world through a special key that forced an interdimensional portal, fusing Solution 9 with the rural landscape of Tural. While we haven't discovered the key to help us travel to The Fourth just yet, we'll likely discover it in the next main story patch, or very early on into the expansion.
How Does Patch 7.5 Lead Into Evercold?
We've yet to receive one last minor story patch, which will segue seamlessly into Evercold. However, we already have a clear setup for how we're going to arrive in the Fourth.
In the most recent patch, the Scions were introduced to Halmarut, one of the last Ascians. In a tense conversation, she explains to us that with Hydaelyn and Zodiark gone, all remaining reflections are on a course to collide with The Source. This kind of rejoining would be far more catastrophic than anything the Ascians could come up with, and would wipe out mankind through all reflections. An event she'd call "The Solstice."
The party would deduce that Halmarut and Calyx plan to cause a premature rejoining, acknowledging that some would die, but some few would at least survive. After showing off Zenos' scythe for style points, she and Calyx would depart, leaving the group to plan their next move.
Calyx would later appear before the group in Mor Dhona, revealing that he and Halmarut are planning to travel to the Fourth. It's unsure why this reflection is important to the mysterious duo, but fans have speculated that the next expansion could lead to us building our very own Yggdrasil, which will help to connect all reflections with one another. If Halmarut wants to trigger an early rejoining, this same world tree could also be the instrument she needs for that to happen.
Who are the Winterers?
The Winterers are a new, mysterious group of characters who are loosely aligned in their goal to survive the oncoming rejoining. So far, the only two members that we know of are Calyx and Halmalut, who have been our antagonists in the post-patch content of Dawntrail.
The act of wintering is to shelter for the winter with supplies, which makes for an obvious connection to Evercold and how this group wants to be the survivors of this mass rejoining. In Norse Mythology, the death of Baldur triggers a terrifying Fimbulwinter, leading to the events of Ragnarök, which ends with the destruction of Yggdrasil. Two humans, Líf and Lífþrasir, survive Ragnarök by hiding within the world tree, which could signal what the Winterers are planning to do.
Every Mainline Final Fantasy, Ranked By Story
If you've ever concerned yourself with the best Final Fantasy stories from the games, I encourage you to look at our ranking of the mainline series.
Unfortunately, anything else about the group remains mostly speculative. Fans believe that this new shady organization could have ties with Meracydia, which remains unexplored to this day. Additional correspondents from Calyx after his supposed death in 7.3 would suggest that there are several independent factions within the Winterers, who are all researching for a way to stop the oncoming Solstice.
With all this in mind, it's looking like Evercold will see The Scions either come into conflict with the Winterers, or eventually need to work together and find a way for all shards to survive.
What Other Reflections Have We Seen So Far?
So far, our Warrior of Light has visited The First and Thirteenth reflections. We've also interacted with a small microcosm of The Ninth, which was pulled into our world.
In Shadowbringers, we'd hunt down Sineaters to purify the land, restoring life to the shard once more. This would culminate in the Raid series Eden, which saw us use the primal-machine to reintroduce elemental aether in "The Empty" to combat the stagnant Light. After several boss fights with reimagined versions of Primals, we're able to restore balance to the shard, and put it on the path to a full recovery.
In the patches following Endwalker, we'd also discover a way to visit the Thirteenth shard, transporting us into the home of so many Void-beings. It's here we met the voidsent Zero, and slowly started the long process of healing the shard.
In Dawntrail, part of the Ninth reflection would visit us, and would immediately start using our reflection as a battery to fuel its existence. As we would learn, the Endless Sphene had planned to travel to different shards, absorbing them of their aether so that her people may live for as long as possible. Given that this would doom all life on every reflection, we'd shut down the Meso Terminal, maintaining the "Endless", stopping Living Memory from draining our shard.
Following this post-patch content, we're introduced to Ethos, a key capable of opening portals between the source and its reflections. Not much is known about the key right now, but we know that it has some connection with Azem. We're able to test this key later on by travelling to the Thirteenth once more, helping both Golbez and Zero fend off an impending Voidsent invasion.
It was also revealed that gateways made by Ethos can only be seen by the key-bearer. How Estinien and Alphinaud are able to join us in visiting the Fourth has yet to be revealed, but we can assume it'll be answered either in the next story patch or at the start of Evercold.
