Final Fantasy XIV is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in August, and fans had better start deleting games now, as the file size for Eorzea and beyond will make it one of the biggest on the system and will only grow larger over time.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is technically advanced enough to handle the modern Final Fantasy games, which means titles like Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will launch day-one on the platform. The problem is that recent Square Enix titles tend to have massive file sizes, usually clocking in at over 100 GB, owing to their triple-A quality visuals eating up storage space.
Square Enix announced at Final Fantasy XIV Berlin Fan Festival that the Nintendo Switch 2 version will launch on August 4, 2026. Those who are eager to go on a portable journey to Eorzea will have to start planning their storage space, as Stealth40k has claimed on Twitter/X that the Switch 2 port of Final Fantasy XIV will take up around 117 GB, which is nearly half of what the system can handle.
Final Fantasy XIV Is Nearly 120 GB On Switch 2 (And Counting)

The 117 GB file size is daunting, and it's only going to get worse. In January 2027, the Evercold expansion for Final Fantasy XIV will launch on all platforms, including the Nintendo Switch 2, which will add a brand-new storyline in a different world. Evercold is adding two new jobs, as well as overhauling the combat system, adding an Evolved Mode for all character classes that changes how they function, so it'll be a huge DLC.
Nintendo Switch 2 players always have the option to increase their internal storage, but that's a costly prospect, considering that the system only uses MicroSD Express cards, which are expensive, even on the low end. This means anyone who wants to play Final Fantasy XIV is going to have to make some hard choices if they want it on the Nintendo Switch 2, otherwise, they'll be downloading and deleting stuff all the time.

There is one major benefit of playing Final Fantasy XIV on Nintendo Switch 2 over the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, and that's the portability factor. Anyone who wants to play Final Fantasy XIV on the go and doesn't want to get a mortgage to pay for a Steam Deck can do so, so long as they don't mind the small UI.
The issue with Final Fantasy XIV's file size is that the game is only going to get bigger over time, even between expansions, as it releases regular updates that add dungeons and story quests. Then again, it's not just the Square Enix games that will cause this issue, as the Nintendo Switch 2 is able to handle much bigger games than its predecessor, meaning the issue will get worse for those who love third-party releases.
The industry's gradual shift away from physical media means Nintendo Switch 2 players may want to bite the bullet and invest in more storage, though it might be smart to wait a few years until the price of the MicroSD Express cards (hopefully) goes down. Until then, anyone who wants to create a Warrior of Light and go on adventures in Eorzea will have to make some hard choices about what other games they'll keep.
