FPS Games That Are Longer Than 100 Hours

1 month ago 28

There's nothing more fun than spending hundreds of hours playing your favorite FPS games.

Most of the time, those hours rack up during multiplayer sessions, whether you're playing online or locally with friends. Every now and then, though, there's a campaign you keep coming back to that's fun no matter how many times you've completed it. They're packed with so much content that you can't help yourself. Personally, there's just something about the classics like Doom that keeps me coming back for more after all these years.

Whatever the reason, whether it's the story, playing co-op, or enjoying some competitive multiplayer, these are the first-person shooters that we've happily spent hundreds of hours with.

While all of the games on this list fall under the "FPS" category, they also belong to a variety of other genres, such as action, RPG, and more.

The Xbox One wasn't all bad and had plenty of games that kept you coming back for more.

10 Destiny 2

Bungie's Forever Game

Destiny 2

I remember being in the room at E3 so many years ago when Bungie was finally ready to show Destiny to the world. It was an ambitious project, one with plenty of exhilarating highs and frustrating lows.

That trend continued into Destiny 2, with many wondering if we were stuck in a relationship with the game that we just can't quit.

You see, when Destiny 2 is firing on all cylinders, there's nothing quite like it. Bungie is still a master when it comes to gameplay, but more often than not, it seems like they can't get out of their own way. Still, it's a game that you can easily spend hundreds, if not thousands, of hours with, so that counts for something.

9 Borderlands 4

A Return To Form

Borderlands 4-1

It's only natural that a game like Destiny and its massive online multiplayer aspects are capable of delivering hundreds of hours of gameplay. Borderlands 4, however, doesn't have that type of infrastructure, yet it's infinitely more replayable.

A return to form for the Borderlands franchise, Borderlands 4 remembers what made the series so successful back in the day. At its heart, the franchise needs to be a great looter shooter with addictive gameplay and not solely rely on its over-the-top personality.

That personality is still there, sure, but Borderlands 4 delivers on the gameplay aspects. Everything comes together so well, from the story, Vault Hunter design, open world gameplay, weapon variety, and even some much-needed quality of life updates.

8 Left 4 Dead

Pills Here!

Left 4 Dead

When I was in college nearly twenty years ago, there's a good chance I was spending my time with World of Warcraft. If I wasn't, though, you better believe I was playing Left 4 Dead.

There was just something about the gameplay loop that worked so well. It's a simple concept, a co-op shooter set during the zombie apocalypse, but Valve pulls it off so well. It's perfectly balanced, accessible, yet challenging to master.

Best of all, this was the game of choice at my local LAN center, which meant we got to play co-op or its PVP multiplayer with people in the same room. These are core gaming experiences I'll never forget, and I wish people could experience this for the first time all over again today.

7 Counter-Strike

Bomb Has Been Planted

Counter-Strike

Speaking of Valve, you might as well not beat around the bush. If you're talking about FPS games with hundreds of hours of content, it's time to talk Counter-Strike.

From my experience, your "preferred" version (1.6, Source, CS:GO, CS2) is based on your age. As someone who is pushing 40, Source was my jam. Matches were the perfect length, and the fact that you didn't respawn after death only adds to the tension.

It's a testament to the staying power of the Counter-Strike brand that the franchise is still insanely popular. As much as I love the traditional game, Gun Game will always have a special place in my heart.

6 Cyberpunk 2077

Good Morning, Night City!

Cyberpunk 2077

The Western RPG genre is one that generally shies away from the traditional turn-based combat we've seen in the genre's past, instead focusing on a first-person approach. As a result, these games may have the DNA of an RPG, but they're also first-person shooters or action games.

Cyberpunk 2077 is a perfect example of what happens when the two genres blend so well. Yes, at first glance, it looks (and plays) like one of the better FPS games on the market. In reality, though, it's one of the deeper, more extensive RPGs you'll ever come across.

Together, it delivers a vast open world you can't help but want to explore. Even at the game's launch, when it was suffering from all of its issues, the best part of Cyberpunk was the secrets that lay within Night City that proved there were some good bones in this foundation. Thankfully, CD Projekt Red turned the game around and helped it become the incredible title it is today.

5 Fallout 4

War Never Changes

Fallout 4-1

Cyberpunk 2077 isn't the only FPS RPG, and to be perfectly honest, neither is Fallout 4. Heck, the two prior Fallout games (Fallout 3 and New Vegas) used the same models.

What gives Fallout 4 the edge for the purpose of this list, though, is that it's undoubtedly the best "FPS" of the franchise. Did it lighten up the RPG side of things? Sure, but it's a trade-off that yields a more accessible, streamlined approach that's also more satisfying to play.

Thanks to the success of the Fallout series on Prime Video, there's a renewed interest in the franchise. It's the perfect excuse to jump in and experience Fallout 4 for yourself for the first time. Or tenth, I won't judge.

4 S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart Of Chornobyl

Journey Into The Exclusion Zone

Stalker 2 Heart Of Chornobyl

From FPS-RPG hybrids to an open-world survival horror FPS.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 may be a bit janky and rough around the edges, but that only adds to its charm and appeal. It's not a run-and-gun type of game where you can bust doors down, shoot first, and ask questions later. The name of the game here is survival, and doing it through the lens of an FPS is something that makes the game more appealing.

What draws you in and keeps you hooked for hundreds of hours, though, is the immersion. There are few games that can match S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 in this regard; it delivers some of the most impressive atmospheric experiences you'll ever see in a video game.

3 Halo: Master Chief Collection

I Need A Weapon

Halo 3 multiplayer

Earlier, I talked about Counter-Strike's staying power over the years and how it has endured as the FPS genre has gone through several changes.

In the case of Halo, it sadly has not had that staying power over its recent releases, but don't let that cloud your judgment on the original games from Bungie. Good news: they're all available in the Master Chief Collection!

Is it "cheating" to feature a game collection that's actually several games (Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, and Halo 4) in one? Possibly, but here's the thing: the fact that you get access to all these games is an incredible value. Even before touching the game's multiplayer offerings, which still hold up today, you can easily spend over 10 hours playing through the campaigns, which also still hold up extremely well, by the way.

2 Escape From Tarkov

Hundreds Of Hours Before 1.0 Even Launched

You know you've got yourself a good game that you've spent thousands of hours playing over the past few years before it even officially launched.

Escape From Tarkov first launched in 2016 in an alpha stage before entering beta a year later. It didn't explode in popularity until 2020, though, when it became one of the more popular multiplayer games in the industry.

It's not the first Extraction Shooter, but you can argue that Escape From Tarkov is the game that put the genre on the map. It's the perfect blend of tension, difficulty, and a satisfying gameplay loop that keeps you coming back for more.

1 Call of Duty: Warzone

Dropping In

Call of Duty Warzone

Like Tarkov with extraction shooters, Call of Duty: Warzone wasn't the first Battle Royale. It's also arguably not the most popular one either; that would go to Fortnite.

Yet there's just something about Call of Duty's gameplay that translates well to the Battle Royale genre. At the end of the day, there's something comforting about Call of Duty, whether it's the nostalgic return to Verdansk or the challenges that come with its latest changes.

Say what you want about the current state of Call of Duty and Black Ops 7. Warzone is still there, waiting for us with open arms, and ready for us to spend who knows how many hours over the next year with it.
