Today, some of the most popular FPS games include Overwatch, PUBG Battlegrounds, and Valorant, both in casual gaming arenas and intense esports competitions.

10 Upcoming FPS Games to Keep on Your Radar in 2026
Here are 10 FPS games currently slated to launch in 2026 that players should keep an eye out for.
However, these FPS titles and others released in recent years wouldn't be so popular or arguably have existed without the breakthroughs and innovations of several earlier FPS games that went on to shape modern gaming in various ways.
Here are 10 FPS games that shaped modern gaming in ways that many new or even veteran gamers may not have realized.
10 Marathon (1994)
Innovations in FPS Movement
Bungie recently revitalized their first major gaming franchise with the 2026 extraction shooter reboot of Marathon and while that game may be a bit derivative of previous extraction shooters in terms of gameplay, the first Marathon game was fairly innovative for the time.
The early 1990s can be described as the Bronze Age of the FPS genre, with several games rapidly changing and innovating upon each other both in terms of visuals and gameplay.
For instance, 1994's Marathon may look visually similar to id Software's Doom on the surface, but it achieved many firsts in the FPS genre, including being the first 3D FPS game to allow players to freely look around an environment without having to physically move their body and being the first FPS to feature dual-wielding.
These innovations may seem minor today, but they helped expand the gameplay potential of FPS games, with several future titles going on to build upon first-person perspectives to implement more stealth-focused gameplay and many games allowing players to dual-wield all kinds of weapons in epic fashion.
9 Left 4 Dead
Defining the Zombie Co-Op Genre
Valve may be the most influential gaming developer and publisher when it comes to FPS titles, as practically every game they released since the late 1990s drastically innovated the FPS genre in ways still felt to this very day.
Left 4 Dead is one of those influential FPS titles as it not only spearheaded co-op gameplay that's still used as a baseline today in games such as World War Z and John Carpenter's Toxic Commando but expanded upon the zombie concept in games.
For example, Left 4 Dead introduced diverse and scenario-focused special infected such as the explosive Boomer, the isolating Smoker, and the Hulk-like Tank that can be seen replicated in nearly every zombie-centric game since, though L4D arguably did it the best in regard to co-op game instances.
Left 4 Dead wasn't the first zombie game to feature special infected, as games such as Resident Evil did so long before L4D was released, but its co-op mechanics and the way special infected dynamically changed encounters was revolutionary to the point that thousands of people including myself still regularly play L4D today.
8 Team Fortress 2
The Birth of Hero Shooters
One year before Valve launched L4D, they released another game that was not only a charming, fantastic FPS multiplayer game, but one that went on to inspire a whole new subgenre of games, with that title being Team Fortress 2.
A sequel to Team Fortress Classic which originally started out as a mod of Quake, Team Fortress 2 was one of Valve's greatest sequels as it improved upon nearly every aspect of the TF formula with new, cartoonish visuals, character-based classes, a focus on humor, and a plethora of new maps and game modes such as the PvE Mann vs. Machine.
Team Fortress 2's gameplay was so well-received and easy to understand that it's still played today by thousands of casual and competitive players 18 years later, but arguably its greatest impact was the creation of the hero shooter genre of games.
TF2's iconic cast of playable characters, each associated with specific weapon types and abilities, laid the groundwork for hero shooters, which went on to find immense financial and critical acclaim in games such as Overwatch and Apex Legends.

The current state of co-op would look much different without these games.
7 Unreal Tournament
Epic Games' Rise to Fame
Epic Games is famous for its third-person titles such as Gears of War and the monumental juggernaut that is Fortnite, but the game that actually made Epic Games a household name was an FPS: Unreal Tournament.
Unlike the single-player PvE Unreal, Unreal Tournament was primarily designed with PvP multiplayer in mind, with multiple unconventional multiplayer maps such as Facing Worlds bringing countless hours of joy while players could still face off against competent bots in solo matches.
Players could even create their very own multiplayer maps on PC with the level editor, being one of the very first games to feature such a tool and granting Tournament infinite replayability.
Unreal Tournament wasn't Epic Games' first game, but it was their first massive success and showcased the power of their first Unreal Engine, establishing a successful legacy that can still be felt today with many developers using Unreal Engine 5 to create their own breakout gaming franchises.
6 Half-Life
An FPS with a Story to Tell
Team Fortress and L4D are some of Valve's most iconic video game franchises, but their flagship series and first game ever released is one of the most influential games of all time, with that game being Half-Life.
Before Half-Life released in 1998, most FPS games were focused on run-and-gun gameplay with little to no story development or stories simply using a summarized window dressing in manuals outside the games themselves.
Half-Life was revolutionary in the narrative power of FPS titles as it was the first FPS to feature in-game scripted sequences with NPCs, with NPCs often reacting to events and the player's actions as well as being required to help progress through certain obstacles and chapters.
Half-Life's game engine was heavily influential to the FPS genre as well, as its modulation easily allowed developers and players to build upon Half-Life's already incredible gameplay and environments to form mods which became their own successful IPs, such as Team Fortress and Counter-Strike.
5 Escape From Tarkov
One of the most popular types of games played by millions of gamers today is extraction shooters and while this game wasn't the first to debut the genre, it was the one to popularize and cause many developers to create extraction shooters of their own, with that game being Escape from Tarkov.
Initially released in beta form in 2017 before fully launching in late 2025, Tarkov drops players in the titular city of Tarkov located in Northern Russia as two mercenary groups strive to loot and escape the city with the best gear they can find without being killed.
Hostile and non-hostile NPCs can be encountered in the city, but the greatest danger comes from other players, as they can not only eliminate other players and steal their gear but wound them enough to perish at a later time if players are unable to find medical gear to heal wounds or damaged internal organs.
This mix of brutal survival mechanics, time limits, and an expansive hostile area became highly addictive with this basic but intense gameplay structure still being built upon and improved today both in Tarkov itself and in other extraction shooters such as ARC Raiders and 2026's Marathon.

4 Halo: Combat Evolved
The Potential of Console FPS Titles
Half-Life may have revolutionized the storytelling capabilities of FPS games on the PC, but the first game to truly showcase the cinematic and multiplayer potential of FPS games on consoles was Bungie's timeless masterpiece, Halo: Combat Evolved.
Released in 2001 as the original Xbox's launch title, CE's campaign was one of the first FPS games to put greater emphasis on its story and environments, with most levels taking place in vast, open landscapes with vehicular gameplay, in contrast to most PC FPS titles being set in tight, gray corridors.
While Master Chief in CE doesn't talk as much as he does in later Halo games, he still has agency and interacts with many characters both in cutscenes and in game such as UNSC Marines and 343 Guilty Spark reacting to his actions.
However, CE also showcased the multiplayer power of console FPS games even without online functionality, with its four-player split-screen and multi-console LAN multiplayer across many great maps and game types, laying the groundwork for future console FPS games to find success and CE's own maps and game types still be replicated today.
3 Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
The Start of COD's Dominance
Halo: Combat Evolved proved that console FPS games can both tell incredible stories and feature enthralling multiplayer systems, but one console FPS game that has truly shaped modern gaming to this very day is, without a doubt, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.
The third Call of Duty game developed by series creator Infinity Ward, Modern Warfare bucked the common FPS trend at the time, with most shooters being set during World War II, and instead dropped players in the boots of soldiers in modern, albeit fictional wars of the early 21st century.
Modern Warfare's greatest impact, however, is seen with its fast-paced multiplayer, which quickly became one of the most popular multiplayer systems of all time thanks to the introduction of classes, killstreaks, perks, prestiging, and more, with many of its components still being utilized in several multiplayer games today.
Sure, thousands of players may be bored to death of annual COD games as most of them these days barely innovate and actually seem to regress in functionality, but Modern Warfare's campaign and multiplayer system DNA can still be found in recent COD titles which still regularly top sales charts despite many gamers' criticisms.
2 Counter-Strike
Mod Turned Global Phenomenon
Half-Life laid the groundwork for several games, and even its own well-regarded sequel, though sadly not a complete trilogy, but arguably its most prolific and popular successor has got to be Counter-Strike.
Originally created as a mod of Half-Life, Counter-Strike is a tactical, PvP game with players split between playing terrorists or counter-terrorists in various game modes such as bomb defusal, hostage rescue, and assassination.
These multiplayer matches laid the groundwork for some of the earliest competitive tournaments in the gaming landscape, being played by millions of players and being the centerpiece for over 10 years of competitions.
Counter-Strike even went on to receive one of the most popular sequels of all time with Counter-Strike 2, which has dominated multiplayer gaming for nearly three years with millions of gamers playing almost every day and earning hundreds of millions of dollars annually primarily through its controversial loot boxes.
1 Doom (1993)
The Most Influential FPS of All Time
Dozens of games have innovated upon and impacted the FPS genre over the decades, but none have had a greater influence on modern gaming than id Software's timeless classic, Doom.
1993's Doom wasn't the first FPS game id Software developed, but it was the first to popularize modern FPS gameplay and mechanics both in terms of single-player and multiplayer, thanks to its easy-to-understand, fast-paced gameplay and varied enemy design.
The first Doom is rather light on its narrative, mainly used as a setting for the game centered around a space marine fighting demons on Mars, but that didn't really matter as it was a ton of fun to rip and tear demons apart with Doom's iconic arsenal of weapons from the chainsaw to the annihilating BFG 9,000.
Doom created the concept of multiplayer PvP deathmatches, helped establish methods for games to be released online and be split into chapters or episodes, and even went on to become one of the most played games of all time, with the original Doom being playable on practically every electronic device made since 1993.
