It turns out that Gears of War: E-Day is coming out a bit sooner than we expected. Even more notably, it's going to be an Xbox console exclusive. While it's set to get a dedicated Direct following the Xbox Games Showcase, Gears of War: E-Day still showed up to kick off the showcase proper with a spiffy extended gameplay segment. At the end of it, The Coalition and Xbox Games Studios confirm that it will launch before the end of 2026, on October 6 specifically.

The trailer reaffirmed that this is a prequel to the original Gears of War, which got remastered in 2025. It once again follows Marcus and Dom from the original Gears trilogy, as we see how they survived the Locust Horde's initial attack on Emergence Day together. It's being developed in Unreal Engine 5 and is expected to be more linear than Gears 5 was.

From the gameplay footage shown, it's clear that E-Day will retain the grisly action, cover-based shooting, and active reload systems that the series is known for. Aesthetically, the characters and environments do look a little more Earth-like than the later Gears of War games, which makes sense as we'll see a bit of what Seras was like before Emergence Day.

Following the gameplay segment, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma appeared and excitedly announced that E-Day will be an Xbox exclusive game when it launches in October. Over the weekend, exclusivity rumors emerged, but a PEGI rating for Gears of War: E-Day then appeared, mentioning PS5, causing more confusion. Now, the dust has settled, and we know that Gears of War: E-Day won't be coming to PS5.

Gears of War: E-Day is launching for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S on October 6.
