Kratos and Atreus go hunting in a production shot of Prime Video's adaptation
Photo: Leah Gallo for Prime VideoSony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios gave God of War fans their first look at the now-in-production TV show based on the PlayStation franchise on Friday. We now have an early look at actors Ryan Hurst and Callum Vinson in the roles of Kratos and Atreus, respectively. And what I'll note here is that early photos of TV shows or movies in production certainly don't always represent the final product!
That said, Hurst's Kratos looks incredibly faithful to the Norse-era games' depiction of an older, more grizzled Kratos, with a near-identical recreation of his costume and ash-covered skin. Vinson's Atreus is visibly quite younger than the character's in-game counterpart, and has been described by showrunners as 10 years old in the God of War television adaptation. To reassure fans, Vinson vowed on Instagram, "I will bring honor to this role."
The God of War TV series will follow father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye, according to an official description. "Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human," the show's creators say.
Joining Hurst as Kratos and Vinson as Atreus in the God of War cast are actors Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, and Danny Woodburn as Brok. One notable casting announcement we're still waiting on is Freya (if she's also appearing in the show).
Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Outlander) serves as showrunner, executive producer, and writer of God of War. Additional executive producers include Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Emmy Award-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye (Shōgun, Fallout) will direct the series’ first two episodes.
God of War will stream on Prime Video, and is expected to arrive in 2027. Amazon MGM Studios has already ordered two seasons of the show.
