The original Gothic was a challenging game, featuring a brutal world that was designed to kill you quickly. It was a game that left the player to figure things out on their own, with almost zero tutorials or waypoints to follow.

The Gothic 1 Remake follows this same formula, and some may even argue that it’s even more challenging than the classic. However, it’s not the enemies or quests that will cause you the most problems in the remake; it’s actually the new lockpicking system.

The lockpicking minigame is causing many issues for players due to its absurd design, so we created this guide to help. Here’s everything you need to know about lockpicking in the Gothic 1 Remake.

When you interact with a locked chest or door, a lockpicking minigame will appear on the screen. The objective at first isn’t clear, and the game does a poor job of explaining it, but the main goal of the minigame is to get all the golden pins to rise through the holes of the silver plates.

To do this, you need to move the silver plates individually. As you move the silver plates to their correct position, a golden pin will rise through one of the holes. However, this is more difficult than it seems, since sometimes moving one silver plate will move another.

For example, say I move the silver plate closest to me. It’s possible that doing this will also move the third and fourth silver plate. Each lockpicking sequence is different, so it’s all about learning as you interact with each lock.

Halfway through, it's already been a strong decade for RPGs.

As you move around the silver plates, you will know that a golden pin is in the correct position if it rises through the hole and a small red dot appears on top of it.

Once this happens, take note of the correct hole and then turn your focus to the other gold pins. Remember, you need to get all the gold pins to rise.

Unfortunately, lockpicking is all about trial and error, and there’s no guaranteed way to successfully pick a lock in Gothic 1 Remake. And the bad news is that a lockpick can break if you diminish its durability level, which is done by pushing a plate too far to the left or right too many times.

Fortunately, there is a way to level up your lockpicking skills, making it much easier to open locked chests and doors. We will discuss how to level up lockpicking in the next section.

Save your game before attempting to lockpick a lock. This way, if you fail and break your lockpicks, you can reload and try again.

Players can level up their lockpicking skills by training with Fingers in the Old Camp. If you need help finding Fingers, just know that he is located on the western side of the camp, near the sheds on the castle wall. More specifically, he is right past Snaf cooking in his cauldron.

When speaking to Fingers, choose the dialogue option “How do I get better at lockpicking?” Keep in mind that this training lesson costs 10x LP and 100x Ore, so you may have to farm a bit in order to be able to afford it.

This lesson makes lockpicking much easier and earns you the following:

  • Breaking a pick does not reset your progress on a lock.
  • You can make up to four mistakes before breaking a pick.
  • Reduces the lock's complexity by removing a connection between two pieces.

How to Purchase Lockpicks

Purchase Lockpicks Gothic 1 Remake

The easiest way to purchase lockpicks in the Gothic 1 Remake is by visiting two merchants in the Old Camp: Mordrag and Dexter. Lockpicks go for 15 Ore a piece.

Both of these merchants can be found near the Old Camp cloth-covered market. Keep in mind that these NPCs follow their own schedules, so if you can’t find these two at the market, you may have to wait for time to pass and then check again.

It's important to note that you can find lockpicks in the world as well, by searching cabinets, chests, etc. Make sure to always grab lockpicks when you come across them.
