Rockstar confirmed GTA 6's pricing this week: $80 for Standard, $100 for Ultimate. Fine. Reasonable, even, next to the $100+ rumours that had been floating around for months. What isn't fine is what that extra $20 actually locks.

Five in-game storefronts – a hair salon, a clothing store, a tattoo parlour, and two vehicle mod shops – are inaccessible unless you own the Ultimate Edition, and seemingly not just the items inside them. Fans worry that this is about the physical locations in the world. If you bought Standard, you cannot walk into them. Full stop.

A looming presence for every other game out there.

Pre-orders open at midnight local time on June 25th, alongside everything else Rockstar revealed this week. Anyone who pre-orders, regardless of edition, automatically gets the Vintage Vice City Pack – a '55 Vapid Stanier sedan, a garage near Ocean Beach, and a set of period-appropriate outfits and hairstyles for Jason and Lucia, all leaning into a Tommy Vercetti-era aesthetic.

Pre-loading begins November 12th, a week ahead of the November 19th release date. Worth flagging too: there is no PC version at launch. This is a PS5 and Xbox Series X/S release first, with PC players left waiting for a date that hasn't been announced yet.

What's Actually Locked

Here's the list, straight from Rockstar's own site. Sara's Unisex Salon: "signature salon styles for both Jason and Lucia, including facial hair for Jason and makeup and nails for Lucia." Stock 305 Style, a Stockyard clothing store. Electric Fang Tattoo, Stockyard's most iconic ink bar, over 50 designs from the artist collective FAILE. Two mod shops – One-Eyed Willie's in Lake Leonida, and Rideout Customs, which "transforms vanilla vehicles into magnificent works of art with detailed interiors, exquisite rims, and donk stylings." Every single one carries the same line: "Only open for business with the Ultimate Edition."

Every single one carries the same line: "Only open for business with the Ultimate Edition."

Some of that I could be talked into reading as quirky copy rather than a literal locked door. Maybe the salon just means extra styles on top of whatever a regular barber already gives you. The mod shops kill that theory instantly. Donk rims and hand-painted custom work are not a cosmetic skin sitting in a menu. It's an entire gameplay loop, sitting in a real building, that simply does not work for you unless you pay more.

Why This Might Impact Immersion

"Signature" usually means extra on top of the standard. Sara's Salon being a bonus location while a regular barber still exists for everyone else? Fine, I'd take that. Donk styling and hand-painted detail work being premium add-ons sitting on top of a functioning mod shop system? Also fine, on paper.

But if One-Eyed Willie's and Rideout Customs are the only dedicated mod shops in their regions, and they're locked entirely, that's not a bonus. That's Pimp My Ride – one of the most beloved things players do in a game like this – gated behind a higher SKU. We don't know yet if Standard players get any real customisation elsewhere on the map. Rockstar hasn't said.

Prepare your wallet and your setup for the return to Vice City.

Imagine this: you're Standard Edition Jason. You walk up to Electric Fang Tattoo. What happens? Does the door just not open? Does an NPC turn you away with some line about needing a better edition? Rockstar built its entire reputation on worlds where almost everything you see is something you can touch. A storefront that physically exists but refuses you for a purchase tier, the fiction has no way of explaining is the exact opposite of that.

Locking cosmetics behind a premium tier, sure, the industry normalised that years ago. Locking the building is a different thing entirely. And it leaves Rockstar with a genuinely awkward question they haven't answered.

The PC Question We’re Still Waiting To Be Answered

Buried under all the edition discourse is a detail that deserves more attention than it's getting: there is no PC version on November 19th. PS5 and Xbox Series X/S get the game first, full stop, with PC support coming at some unannounced later date. That's not a small omission given how much of the GTA Online economy and modding culture has historically lived on PC.

It also changes the calculus around which edition to buy. If you're a console player committing now, you're deciding between $80 and $100 with full knowledge of what you're getting. If you're a PC player, you're being asked to wait an indefinite amount of time regardless of which edition you eventually choose, which makes the whole Ultimate Edition conversation feel slightly academic for a meaningful chunk of the audience.

Where This Leaves Us

To be fair, $100 for the most loaded edition of the biggest game ever made isn't unreasonable on its own. The rest of the Ultimate Edition – unique vehicles, weapon variants, the Classic Car Collection questline – reads like real bonus content, not padding. The problem isn't the price. It's locking physical spaces instead of items or quests sitting inside spaces that everyone gets to enter.

Whether this actually damages the experience comes down to execution, and we won't know until November. But building five real locations into the map and then welding the doors shut for most of your audience would be a strange call from a studio this obsessive about world consistency. Pre-orders open June 25th. Pre-loading starts November 12th. The console release lands on November 19, but PC players will have to wait.
