Rockstar has severely disappointed fans ahead of the pre-orders going live for Grand Theft Auto 6, as it turns out that the physical editions are just codes in a box, rather than containing actual discs.

The video game industry as a whole has been trying to go fully digital for a while now, with even Nintendo seemingly giving in to temptation with its Game-Key Cards, which are cartridges that only contain a license for a downloadable game, rather than the actual title itself. This hasn't been helped by the death of brick and mortar stores, making it harder to go out and purchase a game on launch day.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Looks Set to Challenge GTA 6 This Year

Nintendo announced during the June 2026 Direct that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake exists and will challenge Grand Theft Auto 6

Rockstar had previously announced that the pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto 6 are going live on June 25, 2026. In a surprise update on the official Grand Theft Auto 6 website, new information about the pre-orders was revealed, which include a huge kick in the teeth for physical purists.

Grand Theft Auto 6 Physical Editions Don't Contain Physical Games

GTA 6 Everything You Need to Know Before Pre Orders Go Live

According to Rockstar, "The physical version of Grand Theft Auto 6, containing a download code inside the box, will be available starting November 12 to support pre-loading." This confirms that the physical version of Grand Theft Auto 6 won't contain any discs, and is just a piece of paper in a plastic box, essentially making it a waste of time.

Rockstar also confirmed that players will be able to pre-download the game starting on November 12, ensuring that they'll have plenty of time to acquire it before launch, preventing any server pile-ups the day before. A whole week is plenty of time to ensure everyone will be able to jump in when it's ready.

According to Rockstar, "The physical version of Grand Theft Auto 6, containing a download code inside the box, will be available starting November 12 to support pre-loading."

The pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto 6 will start at midnight local time in each region, meaning fans should have an idea of how much the game will cost soon, thanks to time zone differences. Australia should know how much Grand Theft Auto 6 will cost first, thanks to the power of being in the land down under.

It was also revealed that all pre-orders will come with the Vintage Vice City Pack, containing retro outfits for Jason and Lucia. Those who purchase the newly-revealed Grand Theft Auto 6: Ultimate Edition will also gain access to premium vehicles, weapons, and apparel throughout the story.

The fact that Grand Theft Auto 6's physical editions lack any discs is hugely disappointing, especially for a game this big, as it would have sold out regardless of the versions available. Rockstar must really want to kill the second-hand market if there's no way of reselling Grand Theft Auto 6 to other people further down the line.

If Grand Theft Auto 6 is just a code in a box, then what's the point of even buying it, except as a gift for someone? Surely it's easier to just buy the digital version, to not have to mess around with ordering an item in the post and hoping it doesn't get delayed, while being left with a pointless box?

Hopefully, this decision is just a temporary one, and actual physical editions launch in the future. If not, then Grand Theft Auto 6 is going to be locked to people's digital accounts, for better or worse, and won't be available for resale.
