It feels almost like a fever dream, but the wait is practically over. Grand Theft Auto 6 is officially in active development by Rockstar Games, and it is undeniably the single biggest, most anticipated release in the entire entertainment industry. We have literally spent over a decade waiting for the next proper entry in this legendary franchise. Now, we are finally so close to late 2026 that we can almost hear the neon lights of Vice City humming.

And with only a handful of months separating us from November, the collective anxiety of the global gaming community is hitting a fever pitch – and for good reason. Lately, Rockstar and its parent company, Take-Two Interactive, have been making some incredibly suspicious corporate moves.

We’ve seen some interesting investor calls, a flurry of CEO conference appearances, and even a brief leak where a GTA 6 database listing allegedly popped up on the PS Store. All these distinct breadcrumbs are pointing toward a long-awaited reality: official pre-orders might finally be about to kick off. And if they truly do, it will solidify a couple of crucial things, such as giving fans a much-needed date certainty, reassuring everyone that a third major delay isn't on the horizon, and also settling the chaotic rumors regarding the game’s price tag, which many have speculated could hit exorbitant numbers.

However, before you click that buy button and open your wallet, there is a mountain of information you need to digest to prepare for the upcoming madness in Vice City! And, since we are riding this hype train right alongside you, we’ve compiled an “everything you need to know” article about Rockstar's next masterpiece before pre-orders finally go live.

When Was GTA 6 Announced?

When Was GTA 6 Announced

We can already see how Rockstar and the GTA franchise are special, just by the way that GTA 6 was announced. Instead of putting together a bombastic trailer or a flashy showcase, it was initially revealed in the most low-key, unassuming way possible: back in February 2022, Rockstar slipped a single, subtle paragraph into a routine community update post.

So yes, it was literally just a brief statement tucked away under a simple headline. Yet, it completely shattered the internet for simply being Grand Theft Auto, alongside the promise of being quite a revolutionary title. “With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered – and we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway,” reads the statement that hid the announcement of GTA 6, four years ago.

From Tommy Vercetti to Franklin Clifton, here are all the Grand Theft Auto protagonists, ranked according to their storyline and narrative depth.

Shortly after that drop, the CEO of Take-Two, Strauss Zelnick (remember this name because it will appear a few more times throughout this article), turned up the heat during an earnings report in the same year, stating that the development team at Rockstar was completely determined to set a creative benchmark not just for the Grand Theft Auto franchise, but for the entire entertainment industry.

With that, everything was already pointing to a project that isn't just trying to beat its predecessors, but to deliver a game trying to redefine the boundaries of what an interactive medium can actually achieve.

GTA 6 Map and Setting: Welcome Back to Vice City

When it comes to the playground for all this upcoming chaos, GTA 6 is taking us to the sun-soaked state of Leonida, a fictional reimagining of Florida that serves as the home to the iconic Vice City, which was featured in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002), Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories (2006), and the original Grand Theft Auto (1997).

This marks a massive homecoming for longtime fans, as we haven't touched down in this iconic neon paradise in 18 long years. But don't expect a mere nostalgic trip down memory lane.

Rockstar has already confirmed that they are building this world from the ground up to utilize the raw processing power of modern hardware. The setting stretches far beyond city streets, seamlessly blending pristine neon-lit beaches, dense urban skylines, and highly detailed interior environments like nightclubs, convenience stores, and residential buildings, as we can see in many of its official artworks.

GTA 6 is taking us to the sun-soaked state of Leonida, a fictional reimagining of Florida that serves as the home to the iconic Vice City, which was featured in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002), Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories (2006), and the original Grand Theft Auto (1997).

According to the studio, players are looking at the most immersive and massive evolution of the franchise’s open-world design, since they want to keep GTA as a powerful reference within the genre. “GTA 6 continues to push the limits of what’s possible in a highly immersive, story-driven open-world experience,” said Sam Houser, founder of Rockstar Games, in a press release in late 2023. “We’re thrilled to be able to share this new vision with players everywhere.”

Although we don’t have an official confirmation of the map’s size – only speculation from players suggesting it could be roughly 2.4 to 2.7 times the size of GTA 5 –, the game’s official website exposes some of the regions across the state of Leonida that will be explorable.

Aside from navigating the beautiful, chaotic avenues of the city, players will also be able to venture out into the tropical archipelago of the Leonida Keys, trek through the murky, alligator-infested swamps of the Grassrivers, and explore the grittier, forgotten coastal industrial zones of Port Gellhorn and Ambrosia. There’s even a rugged wilderness waiting at Mount Kalaga National Park! So it’s a map that seems built for boundless exploration – and criminal opportunity, of course, which is exactly where our protagonists come into play.

GTA 6 Characters and Story: Meet Lucia, Jason, and the Vice City Underworld

At the center of the narrative is a criminal love story heavily inspired by the infamous real-world duo Bonnie and Clyde, meaning that GTA 6 will have two protagonists: Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos.

According to official character profiles, the pair quickly finds themselves entangled in a criminal conspiracy that stretches across the state of Leonida. “Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them,” reads their description. “But when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida – forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive.”

And the dynamic between the two is a fascinating contrast of backgrounds and motivations. Jason is a street-level guy who genuinely wants to keep things simple. However, growing up surrounded by grifters and lifelong crooks naturally forced him into working for local drug runners, meaning peace is a luxury he’s never been able to afford.

Lucia, on the other hand, is driven by a fierce desire to secure a good life for her family, and her hustle eventually landed her a stint in the Leonida Penitentiary. She emerges from prison having completely outgrown half-baked fantasies, completely prepared “to take matters into her own hands” to get what she deserves. It seems that both Jason and Lucia will be playable characters. However, Rockstar hasn’t fully detailed how the real-time character-switching mechanics will function compared to GTA 5, but we do know that their trust and partnership form the emotional backbone of the game.

At the center of the narrative is a criminal love story heavily inspired by the infamous real-world duo Bonnie and Clyde, meaning that GTA 6 will have two protagonists: Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos.

Beyond our core duo, a vibrant, eccentric cast of secondary characters populates the Leonida criminal ecosystem, who will impact the narrative in some way.

So let’s start with Cal Hampton, who is Jason’s close friend and associate (he’s the guy always on the poll on practically every artwork of the game). Cal is a guy who feels safest lying low at home, snooping on Coast Guard communications with a few cold beers and plenty of private browser tabs open. He’s the epitome of low-tide America (casual paranoia personified) while his buddy Jason harbors much bigger plans.

Moving forward, we have Boobie Ike, a local Vice City legend (that also acts like it) and one of the few to transform his time in the streets into a legitimate empire spanning real estate with a strip club and a recording studio, and Dre’Quan Priest, a hustler whose dream is to break into music.

With Ike and Dre’Quan, it sounds like the music scene will definitely have its own weight in GTA 6's narrative. This is further proven by two other characters, Bae-Luxe and Roxy, who form the rap duo Real Dimez. These two young women basically managed to turn their time shaking down local dealers into cold, hard cash via spicy rap tracks and a relentless social media presence, and they just signed a contract with Ike’s recording studio.

Last but not least, we have Raul Bautista, a seasoned bank robber always on the hunt for talent ready to take the risks that bring the biggest rewards, using all of his confidence, charm and cunning, and Brian Heder, a classic drug runner from the golden age of smuggling in the city that still moves some “product” through his boatyard with his third wife, Lori Heder. Brian will probably have a big part in the main story, since he’s letting Jason live rent-free at one of his properties, so long as our protagonist helps with local shakedowns and stops by for Lori’s sangria once in a while.

After going through all the revealed characters, we also have some information on the narrative’s tone. Basically, it will be firmly rooted in modern society, so expect heavy gameplay mechanics involving smartphones and social media apps. Judging by what we’ve seen so far, the story will relentlessly satirize internet viral culture, political polarization, and the bizarre realities of modern Florida life, exploring love and chaos through a dark, criminal lens.

GTA 6 Release Date, Platforms, and Pricing

GTA 6 Release Date Platforms and Pricing

Let’s talk logistics, because this is where the corporate calendar starts doing the talking. Originally, GTA 6 was aiming for a broad 2025 launch window. However, to ensure the game meets the expectations of the audience (which are definitely not small), Rockstar adjusted their strategy, settling on a firm global release date of November 19, 2026, after two delays.

In official statements regarding the timeline shift, the development team explicitly noted that they required the extra development runway to polish the experience, cross the finish line safely, and deliver a final product that genuinely surpasses player expectations.

To ensure the game meets the expectations of the audience (which are definitely not small), Rockstar adjusted their strategy, settling on a firm global release date of November 19, 2026, after two delays.

When it launches, GTA 6 will be available exclusively on consoles, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Notably, Rockstar has completely omitted any mention of a PC version for day one.

However, this follows their historical pattern, as GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 both launched exclusively on consoles first, hitting PC roughly a year or two later after receiving platform-specific optimization.

Finally, there is the massive elephant in the room: the price. Because Grand Theft Auto is a rare, hyper-dominant cultural phenomenon that breaks entirely out of the gaming bubble to reach casual consumers and non-gamers alike, rumors have run rampant, which lead to gaming forums with wild theories that the game could retail for an unprecedented $100 or even $200 – I even had a non-gamer friend come to ask me if this was actually true, which just goes to show how completely out of control the viral hype has gotten.

Fortunately, Take-Two's corporate mindset is much more grounded. During a recent financial presentation, CEO Strauss Zelnick explained that the publisher is strictly aiming for a “fair price.” Their core philosophy is to ensure that consumers feel they are receiving significantly more value than what they are paying out of pocket. So, even though we don't have an official price tag yet, it is highly unlikely we’ll see something way higher than what we usually get with Triple A games nowadays, which sits around $70 at launch.

“Consumers pay for the value that you bring to them, and our job is to charge way, way, way less than the value delivery,” stated at a conference for video game executives this year. “How you feel about something you buy is the intersection of the thing itself and what you pay for. Consumers need to feel like the thing itself is amazing and the price they were charged was fair for what they got.”

Watch All the Official GTA 6 Trailers So Far

To date, Rockstar has graced us with two official trailers, and both managed to utterly break the internet, shattering global viewership records within hours of dropping.

The first trailer, unleashed in late 2023, managed to surpass the lifetime viewership of the original GTA V reveal trailer in a single day. Sitting at a staggering 279 million views and counting, it introduced the world to the vibrant, chaotic, and beautifully unhinged reality of Leonida. What blew the community's mind was how many scenes simulated TikTok-style viral videos based entirely on real-life Florida news stories, including an elderly woman furiously wielding hammers in her yard and a wild alligator invading a neighborhood pool party. Believe it or not – all real. You can check the full trailer right below.

The second, which was released on May 6, 2025, takes a much deeper dive into the relationship between Lucia and Jason, highlighting her time behind bars and their tight-knit criminal bond. Besides that, the video also shows the stunning visual fidelity of Vice City's nightlife.

While it holds fewer views than the historical first drop, it has already amassed over 161 million views from fans picking apart every single frame. You can check the full trailer right below.

There are rumors that we might get a third trailer before the game’s launch in November, but Rockstar Games remains silent about that. Either way, this is everything you need to know to be fully prepared to open your wallet when Jason and Lucia’s story hits the shelves in late 2026 – a time when the entire world will likely stop to see exactly what GTA 6 is bringing to the future of the gaming industry.
