It's a Christmas miracle: Haha, You Clowns isn't going anywhere

Last October, Adult Swim's latest viral hit, Smiling Friends, returned for a third season, offering another dose of trippy, dark comedy. But later that month, the network also unleashed a brand-new animated show with a very different vibe. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing (think Joe Pera Talks to You, but in cartoon form). It was exactly the kind of thing that might seem out of touch in this bleak, cynical moment — but maybe that's why it turned out to be such a hit.

Adult Swim announced on Dec. 18 that it renewed Haha, You Clowns for two additional seasons, offering creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand his story of the Campbell family: three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is that they love their widowed dad (Cappa voices all four characters).

"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who gave Haha, You Clowns a chance and spread the word," Cappa said in an official statement. "I’m incredibly thrilled I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."

In the same announcement, Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen also praised the series "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny" (accurate), while shouting out the fans that discovered Haha, You Clowns and spread the word of its uniquely offbeat charm.

"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," Ouweleen said. "In the words of the show: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

Back in October, I praised Haha, You Clowns as "a wholesome alternative to Rick and Morty," adding that, "There’s something surprisingly comfy about watching this lovable brood live their daily lives."

At the time, Cappa told me that his hope for the show was to break the comedy genre out of its cynical streak, which he traces back to the rise of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, among other things.

“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” Cappa said. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

Now, with Haha, You Clowns renewed for not just one more season, but two, maybe Cappa can help usher in that evolution. Or at the very least, offer us a little more time in the warm glow of the Campbell clan.

Haha, You Clowns' season 1 finale airs Dec. 21 on Adult Swim. The entire series is streaming on HBO Max.
