It's been about two weeks since Halo Studios officially revealed the release date for Halo: Campaign Evolved at the Xbox Games Showcase 2026, alongside a plethora of new story and gameplay details.
Since then, a select few players have received pre-release copies of Campaign Evolved, allowing them to play through a couple of levels with a few Skull modifiers unlocked, leading many in the Halo community to ponder all of the features that will be included in the upcoming remake of Halo: Combat Evolved.
10 Xbox 360 Adventure Games Where You’re Actually the Villain
These 10 Xbox 360 era adventure titles allowed people to become villains or start as villains right from the get-go.
Yesterday, Senior Halo Community Manager Unyshek held a June Community Q&A focused on Campaign Evolved, and while many of his answers did make the remake all the more exciting, there were several answers that confused and even frustrated many veterans and newcomers within the Halo community.
One of the most glaring clarifications was the reveal that PlayStation 5 owners of CE must set up and own a Microsoft account and Xbox Gamertag in order to play the game, no matter if people are only playing on the Sony console, making multiplayer a bit of a frustrating process.
Halo: Campaign Evolved's Negative Q&A
Halo: Campaign Evolved's presence at the Xbox Games Showcase put the remake in a fairly positive and exciting light, as many Halo fans had previously expressed concern about the remake's development progress, especially after it was revealed that the game would not feature any PvP multiplayer.
However, a lot of that good press was quickly squashed due to negative revelations about the game in the Q&A, with the requirement for all players to own a Microsoft account being particularly upsetting for PS5 players, who will need to own and pay for both PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass in order to play CE.
According to Unyshek, this requirement "enables both cross-platform play and cross-platform progression... If you're playing on split-screen on PlayStation 5, both accounts will need to have PlayStation Plus and be linked to a Microsoft account. Having these active PlayStation Plus subscriptions will also provide access to online co-op play."
xbox.comThese requirements automatically make the PS5 the most expensive and complex platform to play CE, but this news was only the tip of the Q&A's frustrating iceberg.
The Q&A also revealed that:
- Halo: Campaign Evolved will not feature a Photo or traditional Theater Mode.
- Halo: Campaign Evolved will not feature the PvE Firefight mode.
- Halo: Campaign Evolved will not receive any post-launch content or other additions.
- Halo Studios will not release the demo of the game to the public before launch.
- Halo Studios' retail partners "found no evidence of widespread scalping" of Halo: Campaign Evolved Collector's Edition despite several people reselling the edition for double or even quadruple its original $200 price on eBay and other outlets.
- Halo Studios has no plans to restock the Halo: Campaign Evolved Collector's Edition despite the edition selling out immediately the day of the Xbox Games Showcase 2026.
- Master Chief's Mark IV armor will not be wearable outside the three prequel missions.
- Players will not be able to use the M99A2S3 Stanchion rifle at all in the game, remaining a Sgt. Avery Johnson exclusive in the three prequel missions.
- Alternate skins for Master Chief's Mark V armor will not appear in cutscenes.
All of these revelations have quickly made many in the Halo community upset, with the plan to not restock the collector's edition being particularly disappointing, given that many fans were not able to purchase the edition within the hours of its initial reveal.
If you're playing on split-screen on PlayStation 5, both accounts will need to have PlayStation Plus and be linked to a Microsoft account.
The gameplay revelations have additionally made CE not seem as evolved as the marketing wants players to believe, as prior Halo campaigns have featured Theater Mode and Firefight before, with the last Halo title to feature both at launch being Halo: Reach, and even Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary featured Firefight, albeit via Reach's multiplayer.
It's especially frustrating that the fan-favorite Stanchion won't be usable in the game for players, as ever since it appeared in 2006's Halo Graphic Novel and 2007's Halo: Contact Harvest, fans have been clamoring to use it properly in an FPS, with the rifle only later appearing being used by units in Halo Wars 2 and as alternate skin for the Sniper Rifle in Halo Infinite.
