So much for a snoozy gaming season this summer. Halo Studios announced the long-awaited release date for Halo: Campaign Evolved during Sunday's Xbox Games Showcase. It'll be released July 28 for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X — putting it smack in the middle of a wide-open lane for games releases.

This is the first Halo game since 2021's Halo Infinite. As its title suggests, Halo: Campaign Evolved is a remake of the single-player story mode of 2001's Halo: Combat Evolved; while it features cooperative campaign, it won't include any competitive multiplayer. It's also the first Halo game to be developed in Unreal Engine 5, showing as a bit of a test run for the studio's development pipeline on future Halo projects (which are indeed in development).

Halo: Campaign Evolved will include the return of gameplay-modifying skulls (more than any in series history) and three all-new story missions, so hardcore fans of the franchise have something new to look forward to. Several elements that weren't in the original Combat Evolved, including Brutes and some weapons, were seen in the Xbox Games Showcase trailer.

Halo: Campaign Evolved is coming out during a period when Xbox is leaning back into its most popular franchises. Forza Horizon 6 launched in May, and new Gears of War and Fable games are in the works. As a remake of the original Halo game, though, Campaign Evolved certainly feels like Xbox's biggest play to capitalize on nostalgia and remind players of why they were drawn to this classic shooter franchise.

Halo: Campaign Evolved launches will be released July 28 for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
