Jake brings two decades of experience with him, having covered major industry events, breaking news, one-on-one interviews, and more.

When he's not playing World of Warcraft, he's usually on the hunt for good food and a refreshing beer to wash it down.

There was once a time that Josef Fares, founder of Hazelight Studios (It Takes Two, Split Fiction), was best known for his rant against the Oscars at The Game Awards.

It's hard to believe that took place nine years ago, but as they say, time flies. Since that fateful evening in 2017, Fares's Hazelight Studios has been on a roll. Fares is best known for a focus on local co-operative play and consumer-friendly practices, including his dislike of NFTs and distaste for microtransactions.

The team released their first game, A Way Out, in 2018. They'd achieve stardom three years later, though, with It Takes Two, which would go on to win Game of the Year at the 2021 Game Awards. They buoyed that success in 2025 with the genre-bending co-operative adventure Split Fiction, and are already hard at work on their next game. It's safe to say that, based on their track record, it's already one of the most highly anticipated games in development.

Fares and his team at Hazelight seem to be the antithesis of all the issues with modern gaming, and gamers have certainly noticed, as the studio is now celebrating a major sales milestone.

Hazelight Studios' Games Have Sold a Combined 50 Million Copies

The studio announced on social media this morning that its games have now sold over 50 million units since its formation.

"We're stunned and amazed at how many fans have enjoyed our games," the studio said in a post online. "Your love and support keeps us going."

Here's a breakdown of how all three games have sold:

  • A Way Out: 13 Million
  • It Takes Two: 30 Million
  • Split Fiction: 7 Million

Hazelight's latest co-op adventure is another high water mark in the genre.

It's surprising to see Split Fiction "only" selling 7 million copies, given the accolades the game received. While some may see this as a disappointment, the game did exceed the expectations of publisher Electronic Arts. I can imagine they continue to be thrilled with the runaway success of It Takes Two and A Way Out.

Hazelight ends their celebratory announcement by teasing their upcoming fourth game, which they can't wait to show us. Details are still light, but that hasn't prevented Fares and the team from dropping teases during development. Earlier this year, Fares gave us a behind-the-scenes photo.

Here's to hoping it won't be much longer until we get an idea of what he's cooking up.
