Stardew Valley is still among the highest rated games of all time, and has players returning to it even ten years after its release. It's managed to stay culturally relevant and popular for an entire decade. Cozy games that have come out since then have drawn from many of its base features.

For anyone looking for another reason to play Stardew Valley again, look no further. This list has everything you need.

There are many reasons why Stardew Valley was a hit when it first released, but its endearing popularity made it a classic of cozy gaming. It has many features that keep its community spaces active, draws in new players, and keeps old fans coming back again and again. Every time I open a new cozy game, I'm floored by the impact Stardew Valley has had on this space. Its features are meaningfully present in every major cozy game, and it is truly a leader in this space. It just has that perfect balance of charm and function that makes it addictive.

10 No Win State

There's Nothing You Should Be Doing Instead

While there's a challenge to repair things around the town through Joja Mart or the community center, there isn't any pressure to actually do so, nor is there a timer on it. You decide what success looks like in Stardew Valley, which takes the pressure off you to play a certain way, but it also means there's no way to "win" or end the game. You're free to play it for years or end it within a season.

Many cozy games include this as a feature. Even if there is a more urgent plot than the one in Stardew Valley, it's often still more of a background story rather than something that pushes you to finish. I know I can take my time in Stardew Valley, and there isn't some shadow over everything I do, waiting for me to get back on track and finish the plot.

9 Relaxing Audiovisual Design

Sound Will Make or Break Your Game

I love some good sound design, and Stardew Valley is just one of those games that's a delight to listen to. Both its music and the sound design of the natural world are relaxing and do a lot of heavy lifting to create that chill atmosphere that makes Stardew Valley so popular.

Sound design and relaxing music are now core staples of cozy games, and even show that you don't need voiced dialogue to make compelling characters. What's more important is using sound design and music in clever ways. The leaves rustling in the wind, the sound of my footsteps changing when I walk across different terrain, and different bird calls depending on the season go a long way in making Stardew Valley feel like a living world.

8 Minimal Handholding

Explore and Figure it Out

Stardew Valley

There are no tutorials in Stardew Valley, and you're given minimal instructions from characters on how to do things or even what's potentially available. There's a fishing tutorial, but other than that, you're left to figure things out on your own. When problems arise, such as waking up to find crows eating your crops, you're left to find your own solution.

Stardew Valley has an endless number of challenging runs you can gun for, and these are some of the best.

This may seem frustrating, but it creates independence and feelings of accomplishment and ownership. Cozy games may have tutorials and more guidance than Stardew Valley, but there's also an acknowledgment about the importance of letting players figure out things on their own, such as alternative ways to defeat the monsters in the mines in Fields of Mistria.

7 Customization Options

Your Imagination is the Limit

Being able to do what you want is a massive draw to Stardew Valley. There are enough ways to farm and sell your products that you can conceivably create any farm you can imagine. Want to focus entirely on fishing and not touch crops or ranching? This is an absolutely valid path. Want to create a winery with a vineyard and only sell wine? Also possible. You can create passive income by tapping trees and only selling their byproducts, or you can use them to craft kegs.

Decorating has become a key part of cozy gaming, to the point that it's essential for basically every cozy game genre no matter the setting. Cozy games are also now offering more options for farming and earning money.

6 Player Driven Pace

You Control the Narrative

You can choose how fast Stardew Valley goes. It's possible to get married by the end of the first summer, and you can have a fully functioning and profitable farm and restored community center before Year 1 is out. Alternatively, you can take years to accomplish all these tasks, or never touch them at all.

It all depends on how you want to play. Taking it slow has its benefits, as does speedrunning. The point is, you can choose your pace, a quality in cozy games that many players value. Cozy games often don't have time limits on quests, and take this even further by not including a timer for quest boards.

5 Choice Between Independence or Co-Op

Play Alone or with Friends

A Stardew Valley co-op farm

Cozy games have inherently been a single player genre, but Stardew Valley introduced a co-op mode that lets you add three friends. Building a farm together introduces a sense of community and fellowship that many other similar games miss out on. However, it's not essential to do this, and a single-player game is also absolutely possible.

The important thing here is the choice. Being given a range of options to customize your playthrough is one of the reasons players keep coming back, whether you want to play with friends or never touch co-op mode and want to play on your own. Cozy games are now increasingly adding a co-op mode alongside single-player mode.

4 Consistent Post-Launch Support

Stardew Valley Keeps Getting Better

Microtransactions have become the norm for gamers even if we really don't want them. Stardew Valley is a safe space that is free from this. Ten years since its release, Stardew Valley has gotten content and quality of life updates, including new marriage candidates, new areas, and other features that most other games would lock behind a paywall.

Just the fact that ConcernedApe is so generous and consumer-friendly builds loyalty in Stardew Valley players. We're grateful for the care he puts into Stardew Valley, and the community is a supportive place that welcomes all and keeps the game culturally relevant. People come back to the game whenever there's a new update, and the surge of players also brings in new ones curious about the hype. Other cozy games have caught on to this, and now post-launch support is an expectation in the community.

3 Mod Friendly

Change Whatever You Want

Stardew Valley is very easy to mod, partially because there are no voiced lines. Mods keep the game alive because of the continuous influx of new content and features that let you make your game look and feel however you want. There are mods of every kind out there to customize your Stardew Valley experience, including new characters and romance options.

Some mods expand on the characters and romances, but my favorite mods are quality of life ones that make fishing easier or change the appearance of foliage for a different aesthetic. Modding cozy games, especially ones that run on simple engines, is becoming increasingly popular and is a strategy that game developers are using to prolong the life cycle of their games.

2 Romance and Marriage

Fall in Love Again

Romance is a staple in cozy games, and it's hard to imagine that there was a time when this wasn't so. There are a dozen romance candidates in Stardew Valley in a wide range of ages and personalities. Romance is a common feature of cozy sims now, but Stardew Valley is the one that started it all. Its romance and marriage system is simple but immersive, and married life with children is charming.

Players become attached to one character, and often return to Stardew Valley to marry them again. I like the romances, but I personally get Krobus as a platonic roommate. The sheer variety and acknowledgment of what relationships can look like is another reason people keep returning to Stardew Valley, especially if it's both sweet and makes you feel seen.

1 Meaningful Character Arcs

Stardew Valley's Characters Change with You

Characters form the heart of many cozy games, and they're a big reason why players enjoy them. Stardew Valley went a long way in establishing a relationship system and the character development that comes with it.

Stardew Valley's community all have friendships or family connections to each other. Some characters have more mundane problems, but those problems are important to them, like deciding what career path to take. Others have more serious problems like depression or alcoholism. Regardless of their problems, all of Stardew Valley's characters experience meaningful change as you get to know them, and that change is one of the most important reasons why Stardew Valley is so influential.
