Whether it's trudging through the world of Elden Ring, or grinding out raids in Old School Runescape, Laurence is always up for a challenge. However, in real life, his current challenge is learning how to speak Spanish and cooking authentic Mexican cuisine.
It’s always been fairly clear that, in terms of combat in Terraria, Summoning has been the odd one out. Released far later than the other 3, Summoning, while still powerful, hasn’t always had the same variety.
The 1.4.5 patch sought to bring Summoning in line with Melee, Ranged and Magic by implementing a wealth of new Summoning equipment to smooth out both the early-game and late-game.

The Mushroom Staff is one of these new additions to the game, and will massively help those who need a good pre-hardmode boost. Dead Cells and Summoner fans rejoice! So ready those whips, it’s time to get mushy!
Finding a Mushroom Biome
Before we even think about crafting the staff, we first need to find ourselves a large mushroom biome to gather materials.
Usually, while making your hellevator, it’s pretty common to come across these biomes, as they’re scattered all over the place. As soon as you see that familiar blue glow, you’ll know that you’re close.
The mushroom biome is the perfect place for early game characters to grab a bunch of Gold Chests and Life Crystals, as they spawn very commonly here. And of course, while you’re exploring, you should really harvest as many glowing mushrooms as possible.
In addition, try to chop down as many mushroom trees as you can, as they have a high chance of dropping the coveted Mushroom Grass Seeds. Look for special mushroom houses, and watch out for those pesky enemies as you make your way around.
Crafting the Staff
To craft the staff, you’ll need any kind of anvil and the following items:
- 300x Glowing Mushrooms
- 5x Mushroom Grass Seeds
- 5x Tissue Sample / Shadow Scale (Depending on World Evil)

As you can see, before you’re able to craft the staff, you’ll need to have defeated the Brain of Cthulhu or the Eater of Worlds (or at least killed some of their summons). So this is only available about halfway through the early-game. However, with a good arena and some strategy, these bosses can be killed fairly swiftly.
Using the Mushroom Summons
Once you have the staff, you can left-click to summon a Mushroom Boi (yes, that’s what they’re really called). Pair this with something like Bee Armour, for an extra 2 minion advantage, and Snapthorn for extra Tag damage and a way to control your minions.
The best Modifier you can get on this staff is the brand-new Fabled Modifier, which also released this patch.
The Mushroom Bois will naturally target your enemies, with a base damage of 5. However, if you get far enough away, the minions will dash through the air to your target and cause a small red explosion.
While this can be a rather powerful weapon in the right hands, it unfortunately gets outclassed quite quickly by other weapons. Because the early-game is pretty quick, you will upgrade to the Hornet staff and then the Imp Staff before taking on the Wall of Flesh and proceeding to Hardmode.
However, if you’re a big mushroom fan, then I’m sure you’ll find a way to make this work!
