How to Get Gunpowder in Windrose

If there is anything pirates are known for, aside from rum, looting, and a lot of other things, it's using a sword and pistol. Most pirate imagery shows these warriors brandishing a cutlass and pistol as they fight aboard ships.

In Windrose, you are tasked with surviving on various islands, steadily learning more about the world and the expedition as you journey the high seas. A big part of the game is combat, and if you use a gun, you will need gunpowder to fire it.

With this resource being scarce, it can be difficult to find, especially early in the game. Let's break down how to get gunpowder in Windrose.

Where to Find Gunpowder

As stated previously, gunpowder isn't the easiest resource to come across in the early hours of the game. This is because you don't have any means of crafting it, and there are few locations where you can obtain it.

Luckily, you start the game with a small supply of gunpowder in your inventory, but once this has run out, you must find more to continue using your firearm.

To obtain more of this fine black powder, you will need to locate enemy camps. It is impossible to tell you exactly where they are since the map is randomized, but they are easily spotted thanks to fires and the multitude of pirates surrounding them.

Pirate camps are marked by tent symbols on the map, making them easy to locate once you are near them. Killing the pirates within the camp can get you gunpowder, but it will mostly be found in the large supply boxes sprinkled around the camp.

Another location where you can find gunpowder are buccaneer warehouses. These will typically have large supplies of gunpowder scattered around as well, allowing you to stock up for some time.

How to Craft Gunpowder

Thankfully, you also have the ability to craft gunpowder, though this doesn't come for some time. To craft gunpowder, you first need to unlock the ability to craft a millstone. This is one of the many crafting structures you can build around your camp.

The millstone becomes unlocked when you find corn on one of the many islands around the map. Corn is typically found on ancient farms. These are normally located in foothills areas, which tend to be on the more southern parts of the map from our experience.

Once you have collected corn for the first time, you will automatically unlock the millstone. This will give you access to various new crafting recipes, including gunpowder.

The recipe for gunpowder is 25 ash and 25 sulfur, both of which you should already be able to obtain easily. In case you need a bit of a refresher, ash is obtained from a kiln, as a byproduct of creating charcoal.

Sulfur, on the other hand, is located in the foothills areas. You will notice that some of the rocks have a yellow moss-like substance on them. This indicates that they will get you sulfur when mined with a pickaxe. Keep in mind, you will need an iron pickaxe to obtain sulfur. Combine these two ingredients and you will get gunpowder.
