Being a cozy title, Starsand Island has a major focus on crafting, giving you tons of materials to gather and use to create amazing items. For instance, Carbon Line will allow you to craft bows that you can use to take on enemies.
One of the more important materials that you will need to get your hands on later in the game is iron. This material is used to craft iron ingots, which, in turn, can be used for multiple items in the game.
Let's break down where you can find iron in Starsand Island, and what it is used for.
Where to Find Iron
Iron is not one of the materials that you will have access to right away in Starsand Island. Instead, you will mostly be mining copper in the early hours of the game and crafting items using said material.
Later on, you will be given the task of upgrading your workbench, furnace, and other equipment. During this time, is when you will be required to get your hands on some iron and, in turn, iron ingots.
If you have been exploring the Moonlit Forest, you may have come across iron already and not realized it. This ore becomes available to mine after you cross into the Dreamfall Garden section of the forest.

Near the Dreamfall Garden portal, you will find multiple veins of ore with a grey hue. This is iron, and mining it requires you to have the Impulse Pickaxe.
You can craft the Impulse Pickaxe using copper, flourite, softwood, and quartz. Keep in mind that you also need the basic pickaxe for this crafting recipe as well.
Iron is found all throughout the section of the forest, but it is important to note that it isn't typically found in other sections. Past this area of the forest, you will find different ores, such as Primorite.
What is Iron Used For?
Iron is not the material you will be using for most projects. Instead, you will need to process it into an iron ingot, as this is the more valuable material.
Processing this material requires you to have the furnace (II) model, which is obtained as part of the crafting questline for Zerine. You can purchase the blueprint for this item at any time from Zerine's shop in town.
Once you have the first upgrade for the furnace, you can use it to process your iron ore into iron ingots. It takes four iron ore and one coal to make one iron ingot. Keep this in mind as you create more of this material in the future.
Various crafting recipes require the use of iron ingots, so it is good to have iron on hand to create this material as you progress through the game and unlock more crafting recipes from the town's residents.
One of the earlier uses for iron ingots is to upgrade your crafting workbench. During the quest to become a junior crafter, you will be tasked with upgrading all of your workbenches and equipment. During this time, you need iron ingots to upgrade your workbench to the second level.
