There are plenty of materials to collect in Windrose. After you first wash up on shore, you will quickly need to start gathering materials like clay, copper, fiber, and wood. However, more rare materials are required as you progress through the game.
After defeating your first boss, you will quickly learn that you need iron to continue your journey. This material is similar to copper, but is required for many more structures, upgrades, and crafting recipes.

If you can't find that legendary weapon, why not build it yourself?
With resources being scarce wherever you go, you might have a difficult time tracking this material down, so let's break down where you can find iron in Windrose.
Where to Find Iron Ore
Before you can craft iron, you will need to get your hands on iron ore. Luckily, there is a hint as to where you can find this ore if you look at the name of the iron ingot. Iron is labeled as Foothills Iron Ingot, meaning you can only obtain the material required for it in foothills areas.
Once you have progressed far enough in the story, you will automatically be pointed to a location where a foothills biome is located on the map. Of course, you won't always have a mark on your map to follow.
Foothills are taller islands with rocky cliffs and larger hills. They are easy to spot once you get close enough, as they rise fairly high out of the water and are vastly different from the basic coastal jungle biomes.
Foothills biomes are often found to the wester on the map and to the south. Be careful traveling to these areas, as the enemies are much tougher, and there are new varieties.
Similar to hunting for copper, you will need to look for ore deposits. However, you won't be entering a cave system. Instead, you will need to look for mining locations such as chasms that house iron ore.
Iron ore sticks out because of its brown, rusty coloration. Once found, you will need at least a copper pickaxe to mine it. Keep this in mind and craft one before hunting for iron ore.
How to Craft Iron Ingots
Now that you have some iron ore, you can use it to craft Foothills Iron Ingot. Just like crafting copper ingot, you will need both iron ore and charcoal.
Charcoal is obtained by burning wood in a kiln. Once you have both materials, you will need to combine three iron ore and one charcoal in a smelting furnace to create Foothills Iron Ingot.
Because you are smelting the material, it will take some time. Be sure to also save the ashes from the kiln, as they can be used to craft gunpowder later on.
What Are Iron Ingots Used For?
With some Foothills Iron Ingots in your inventory, you now have access to some new structures and items that you couldn't build before. Iron ingots are used to build the following items:
- Jewelry Table
- Nails
- Iron Bullets
- Iron Axe
- Iron Pickaxe
- Ironware
- Anvil
Along with this, you will need iron ore to upgrade your weapons and armor. Many weapons require iron ore to upgrade them beyond level five. You will also require a level two building station.
