Shane Limbaugh (He/Him) is a Contributor from the US. While he hasn't been writing about games for very long he has certainly been playing them. His degree in Game Design and Criticism let him better understand the fundamentals of the industry and the games themselves. There aren't many games he hasn't at least put hands on thanks to his time working at GameStop.

One of the many interesting aspects of MIO: Memories in Orbit is getting to upgrade things from Mel. Unfortunately, they'll be stolen at some point by the Hand, and you'll lose access to Mel's shop.

This isn't the worst thing that can happen in this game, but it is rather frustrating when the game keeps sapping whatever extra health you may have earned. If you want Mel back, you'll need to travel to the Redacted area to find and save them from their captor.

It isn't an easy task, but you can end up doing this while on the hunt for the alternate ending, as you'll pass over the tube you take to reach Mel. This guide will tell you where to find that tube and who you'll have to fight to get Mel back.

How to Reach Mel

Mio Get Mel Back Map Location

To get to the tube, you'll need to do a few things first. Starting off, you'll want to head to the Vault spawn point and make your way to the left without taking any tubes or any detours.

Mio Get Mel Back Secret Path

You'll hit a rather large empty room, and in the bottom right corner of this room, there's an open drawer with robot parts. This hides a secret entrance to the area you need to go to.

Once you're in this area, you'll just have to follow the path laid out for you for the most part. You'll have to activate all the Gloomwater Pumps along this path to remove the Gloomwater in your way.

After activating the first pump, you'll want to head to the left down the tube that should be open now. You'll keep making your way left for now until you enter a tube that spits you out in a large room with a broken robot from which you can get an Old Core.

Mio Get Mel Back Pump 2

Drop into this room and head left. You can keep following this path, and you'll come across the next Gloomwater pump you need. Activate it and start heading to the right again.

Mio Get Mel Back Pump 3

Keep going right, and you'll reach another pump to activate. In the next room, drop between the floor since you'll need to activate another pump before you can get any farther.

Mio Get Mel Back Pump 4

Head to the bottom where all the Gloomwater is, and then use your Striders to climb along the ceiling until you reach all the metal grates. Climb up those grates, and you'll find the pump you need to activate. Then you can head back up to the top part and keep moving right.

When you reach the part with the pipes, you'll see a tube on your left, but you don't need to take it to reach your destination. Keep heading right and follow the path past all the razor blades, and you'll eventually come upon the Overseer you'll need to mend to reach the Crucible.

You can open the door next to the tube to get an easy way back, just in case you end up dying to Debby.

Finally, just past the little robot you saved, you'll come across the tube that drops you down into the area where you'll face off against Debby. Debby isn't super tough in actuality. They don't have any crazy moves you'll need to look out for, and by this point, you should have a pretty solid setup to beat them in one go.

Rewards for Saving Mel

Mel will return to their shop, and you can easily reach them by taking the shuttle up and fast traveling there. Of course, this means you'll have access to the shop again, but more than that, you'll get a nice upgrade, Gratitude.

MOD: Gratitude

  • Effect: Restores an extra layer of protection (non-stackable) when Mio stays on the ground for a short time
  • Modifier slots required: 40

Getting bonus health in a metroidvania is always a nice bonus, but especially in MIO, considering how annoying some of the platforming sections can be. Now you've got Mel back, and you're ready to tackle all the challenges ahead of you.
