Perhaps your new best mate in Gothic 1 Remake, Mud, is a bit too friendly for your liking. If you make the unfortunate mistake of meeting Mud, he'll single you out as his life's companion, stalking you for hours. If a trillion questions and anecdotes of a highly personal nature are your cup of tea, you've got nothing to worry about, but if not…
Here's how to get rid of Mud in Gothic 1 Remake.
What to do with Mud in Gothic 1 Remake
Mud is a resident of the Old Camp. He's usually sitting outside his hut, near Snaf the cook (where you might've picked up the "Snaf's Recipe" quest). Even if you don't initiate a conversation, Mud will start following you if you approach him. Sure, he'll politely ask whether he may join you, but even if you say "Piss off," he'll take it as a "yes." From that moment onward, he'll frequently force you into a dialogue screen.

Like the original game, not really; Mud is mostly a gimmick to annoy you. Despite his promises, he won't help you get accepted into the Old Camp, though you can accept his invitation to sleep in his hut (which isn't that useful, since you'll get a hut next to the fighting arena for free). Note that Mud's bed icon remains red, indicating you're not allowed to sleep there, but he won't protest if you do — and neither does he complain if you rob his personal chest, though it only contains three ore nuggets, one piece of bread, and some junk.
How to get rid of Mud in Gothic 1 Remake
Before we explain the best ways to scare or murder Mud, here's an overview of every way to get rid of him:
- Beat him up. This is the best option if you'd like to avoid cold-blooded murder, but it may take a second beating to break the friendship permanently.
- Kill Mud. The best way to ensure you'll never see him again — and get some loot to boot.
- Let monsters kill Mud. Lure him into the wilds and let the beasties handle it.
- Wait for Mud to die. Even if you let him tag along, Mud is likely to get killed by monsters or angry NPCs as you explore and brawl your way through The Valley of Mines, though it may take a few hours.
If you don't want to kill Mud, you can scare him off permanently by beating him (either with your fists or a weapon). If you fully deplete his HP, Mud will fall to the ground, giving you the option to spare his life (and rob him) or kill him. If you spare his life, he'll hate you, but he'll never bother you again. Since nobody cares about Mud's safety, you can do this in broad daylight, in the middle of the Old Camp, though it's much safer to do it outside the gate so you don't accidentally hit or threaten another NPC.
If, however, you beat Mud without fully depleting his HP, he will run off temporarily but eventually return. When that happens, you can either accept it, kill him, or beat him up again. Our testing suggests that a second beating, even without depleting his HP, scares him off for good (five Mud-free days and counting).
To murder Mud, simply attack Mud (same as beating him up), but be prepared to deliver the final blow after depleting his HP. If you haven't leveled your skills much, you may have to chase the fleeing Mud for quite some time, which is why the more "efficient" way to deal with Mud is to have him killed by a powerful creature.
So, for those unburdened by empathy, the easiest way to get rid of Mud is to lure him into a monster den and let them handle the dirty work. To prevent him from running away and surviving, try to stay close enough so he faces you, then allow the monsters to attack him from behind. Scavengers, wolves, and blood flies should finish Mud in seconds. Wait for the monsters to wander off before looting Mud's corpse.

Before you go medieval on Mud, however, beware that scaring or killing Mud early locks you out of the "Mud Freak" achievement. To obtain this achievement, you must exhaust all of Mud's dialogue, which means he must follow you for quite some time, and then you must beat him up (fully depleting his HP, without killing him), to hear the final voice line.
