Windrose is full of powerful weapons and armour, from slashing sabres to massive muskets and even plague-bearing magical halberds! However, one of the most devastating weapons can be especially tricky to find, and can only be looted near the very end of the game.

The Rapier of Devastation is as gnarly as it sounds. In a game like Windrose, where you need to be moving constantly, dodging, running, and blocking while you’re surrounded by hordes of pesky pirates, being light on your feet is essential. Lugging around huge weapons like Greatswords and Halberds isn’t great for this.

Instead, this rapier allows you to dish out a ton of quick damage while maintaining a good amount of stamina, so you can dash back and take a breather. And that’s before I even mention its ridiculously strong special attack. Let’s see where we can get our hands on this wondrous weapon and how best to use it.

Where to Find the Rapier

Windrose Rapier Stats

Firstly, you need to be in the third act of Windrose in order to find this weapon. This means you need to have beaten the second main boss, Israel Hands, located in the Foothills.

Once you’ve done this, you can sail over to the Cursed Swamps area, which is full of strange, plagued creatures and tortured souls. Lovely!

The difficulty comes in actually finding the Rapier. Windroses’ map differs for every player. However, the islands that you encounter are actually the same; they may just be in a different location.

In addition, the loot that you find from chests and corpses isn’t always the same either. The rapier, along with the other plague weapons found in the Swamps, can be found randomly in any chest or lootable corpse that is found in places of interest.

Windrose Map Locations

This means that you can get lucky and find it in the first chest you encounter, or you may be unlucky like me and find it literally in the second-to-last lootable spot on the third major island. Whatever happens, you should always be able to obtain it eventually, as long as you loot every container at every point of interest.

You can check if you’ve completed all spots by looking at the bottom right of the map page.

Targeted Searching

However, this doesn’t mean that you can’t give yourself the best possible chance of finding the rapier as soon as possible. And believe me, you want this weapon as soon as you get to the Swamps, so you can easily deal with the hundreds of enemies found there.

There are several places in the swamps with lootable spots, as shown in the pictures above. Here are a few ones to make a beeline for:

  • Ruin with a Flowerbed - 8 Chests
  • Crypt - 11 Chests
  • Tainted Ruins of an Ancient Temple - 6 Chests

These spots have a crazy amount of loot available. But of course, that also means that there are a lot of enemies guarding the chests.

If you want, you can instead head over to the smaller ruins scattered around the islands, which aren’t as heavily guarded and try your luck there. Drag the enemies away from the ruins and then dash in to grab your loot. You can, of course, try fighting them, but since many enemies will be level 15 here, you might have a bit of a tough time.

Combat Capabilities

Windrose Rapier Combat

So, you’ve found your Rapier. Just why is this thing so good? Well, apart from the base damage and decent scaling, the beauty of this lies in the additional effects.

Every time you damage an enemy with the Rapier, you will apply 1 Plague Mark. Once you’ve applied 8 of these marks, you can then perform a Heavy Attack to burst all the marks at once and deal a hefty chunk of additional damage.

Now, if you upgrade this weapon to epic quality, you get an extra effect. If you burst 5 or more marks at the same time, you get 40% of your max health back! So, not only is this weapon great for dealing massive amounts of quick burst damage, but you also get your health back if you end up taking damage while building marks.

Not only is this great when you’re randomly out in the wild and forget to bring bandages or potions with you, but it's fantastic for survivability in long, drawn-out boss fights, like the one at the end of Act 3.

To really bring out the best of this weapon, put a good chunk of your stat points into precision, and equip the Spear-throwers ring and the Necklace of Precision. Reallocating stat and talent points is free, so go experiment!

Upgrading the Rapier

Windrose Ingot Arborum

You will find the Rapier at level 10, which is decently strong on its own. However, you can upgrade it to a max level of 15 with the right materials.

To upgrade the Rapier, you’ll need the following items:

  • Mire Metal Ingot
  • Crocodile Hide Piece
  • Ingot Arborum
  • Smithing Flux

The Metal Ingots can be smelted by using Ancient Scraps, mined in the swamps and Quagmire Powder, found by killing common enemies.

The Smithing Flux can be found on Tortuga, and costs 10 Piastre from the Smugglers found there.

Finally, the Ingot Arborum can be crafted on an Enchanting Table by combining Mire Metal ingots, Essence Arborum and Tainted Bile. The essence is acquired from smelting plague logs, while the bile can be found by killing Plague Crocodiles. You can also gather your Crocodile Hide Pieces this way! Win-win!

Every time you upgrade the Rapier, you will need more materials, so make sure you stock up while you’re out in the swamp!
