With restoration as the name of the game in Pokémon Pokopia, there are various ways to go about it. While environmental revival is the main focus, such as restoring trees and water sources, there are other methods to help bring the Dream Islands back to life, along with the humans and Pokémon that once inhabited them.
Pokémon Pokopia: Learn How to Jump
Sure, you can leap naturally, but jumping opens up so many more possibilities in Pokémon Pokopia!
While cooking is one way to go about it, one particularly special means of restoration in Pokopia is painting. As you build homes for yourself and/or your Pokémon across each region and unlock new items, you can further customize them by painting them in various colors and patterns. If you're not sure where to start, here's how to unlock and use paints in Pokémon Pokopia.
How to Unlock Painting in Pokémon Pokopia
Painting is one of the many unique skills you can pick up during your adventures in Pokopia. To unlock it, you'll first need to make your way to the Bleak Beach region, which is via the gate directly east of the Pokémon Center in the Withered Wasteland region. Note that you need 'Great' Trainer status to get the gate to open.
Head to Bleak Beach, then turn and head left to the north side of the region until you find a Smeargle Pokémon aptly named Smearguru painting on an easel under a gazebo. Speak to them, and after some banter about paint colors, they'll ask you to create some dye powder by crushing Leppa Berries.
To do this, you'll need the help of a Pokémon with the Crush specialty, and the easiest one to ask for this is Onix, whom you should have on your roster by now after your quests in the Withered Wasteland. However, there are several other Pokémon who can do the job as well, including:
- Onix
- Steelix
- Conkeldurr
- Electivire
- Pawmo
- Pawmot
- Dugtrio
- Geodude
- Graveler
- Golem
- Magmortar
- Larvitar
- Pupitar
- Tyranitar
- Metagross
- Cranidos
- Rampardos
- Shieldon
- Bastiodon
- Tyrunt
- Tyrantrum
- Amaura
- Aurorus
Once you've taken care of that errand, return to Smearguru and give them the dye powder, which they'll then turn into paint. Completing this request then unlocks the option for you to have them recolor certain types of items and furniture for you. This can even extend to recoloring your home, but you'll need to have Smearguru follow you to said home to do the job, and have the paint color you want already in your inventory for them to use.
To be able to paint things yourself without Smearguru, you'll need to unlock Paint Balloons. You can toss them at the item you want to recolor, and they can be crafted on a workbench by using any Paints you have on hand. Alternatively, they can be purchased from the shop when available.
How to Unlock All Types of Paint in Pokémon Pokopia
There are several different shades of paint you can unlock in Pokopia, and you can even find some by pure luck while exploring before you even complete Smearguru's request. Certain shades of paint can also be combined to create more unique hues.
Also, paints can either be crafted using the items listed below, or they can be purchased in the shop when available.
Once you get Withered Wasteland's Environment Level to 10, the shop will carry unlimited Black and White paint!
Crafted Paints - Base Colors
To craft base paints, you'll need a variety of berries, and Black and White paints in particular are obtained as potential bonuses when crafting other colors.

How to Unlock Patterns in Pokémon Pokopia
Along with solid paint colors, you can take it a step further and unlock different colorful patterns. Smearguru will have some for you to start with, but there are other ways to get them. In addition to finding them while exploring (similar to finding paint colors), you can also unlock some with Vespiquen.
Once you unlock her in the Withered Wasteland, you can exchange Honey with her and receive various items as rewards, ones decorated with patterns you can unlock. Take them to Smearguru in Bleak Beach, and you'll then be able to use those patterns for your own customization needs. Furthermore, you can do this same process with items sold in the shop that have patterns.
Make sure to pay Jirachi a visit during your painting adventures as well!
