How to Play Skyblock in Terraria

With the recent addition of a brand-new Terraria patch (1.4.5), among a huge amount of quality of Life changes and new goodies to obsess over, we were given access to a whole host of new World Seeds!

One of these seeds is the much-requested Skyblock seed. Inspired by the success of Minecraft’s own Skyblock custom map, which sees players spawn into a blank world with nothing but a tree, some dirt, and tools to make a cobblestone generator, Terraria has built on this, making it a truly unique challenge.

If you fancy a novelty Terraria adventure, like nothing you’ve experienced, then this is definitely the way to go.

How to Make a Skyblock World

After downloading the new update, first of all, make a new character, and then when shown the world screen, type in “Skyblock” for the world seed. This should work in lower case and upper case.

Next, choose your options and difficulty settings, and load into the world. In your World Select Menu, you will see your Skyblock world represented by the cloud-like tree on the left.

Once you’ve done this for the first time, it will unlock Skyblock in the seed menu, so you won’t have to type it in again for your next playthrough.

Tips for a Skyblock Adventure

Starting Off

As soon as you spawn into your world, you will quickly notice that all you have are your classic starting items, a Solifier, a dirt platform and some cloud blocks. It might seem as though progressing is impossible, but you’d be surprised by how far you can get.

There are no other biomes save for the initial starting area, and everything west, east and south of the starting Skyblock area is completely empty. Don’t bother jumping off, you’ll just meet a long, drawn-out death.

How to Progress

Luckily for us, enemies will still spawn, and the most common enemy is a Slime. Now, slimes can hold all sorts of items, and it seems as though in this particular seed, slimes with items in them are more common than usual.

The first 2 things you will want to look for are a Slime with Grass Seeds within and one that drops an Acorn. Once you have these things, you can start planting grass and growing trees.

In addition, because you have the Solidifier, you can use the gel from the slimes to make Slime blocks, and then build a house using the slime furniture set. You can also use the slime to make weapons, namely the Slime Whip and Slime Spear. This will massively speed up your Slime slaying abilities.

Blocks Types and Events

Housing Troubles

You should try to build a house as soon as possible, preferably before the first night, as you’re going to get absolutely shredded by the Zombies and Demon Eyes. These enemies will drop a good amount of cash, alongside items like the shackle for some extra defence.

Gather some tombstones together after you die, and eventually an orange flower will spawn. When picked up, you can summon Abigail, a powerful early-game summoning minion.

Once you’ve gathered cash and built a base, the Guide and the Merchant will move in. You can buy a sickle and cut grass for hay blocks, and buy a piggy bank for storage.

At some point, a Slime Rain Event will spawn, giving you a good chance to farm as much gel as possible. King Slime will spawn at the end of this event, though killing him is pretty tricky in such a small and cramped area. If you’re looking for a good source of money, killing Pinky will yield a nice amount of gold.

How to Obtain Stone

Eventually, you may have built a good-sized house, had a couple of NPCs move in and gotten a good amount of resources, including some ores. But just how on earth do you obtain stone to smelt those ores and get yourself some proper weapons and armour?

Well, the answer to most of your questions in this game mode is Slimes, of course. First off, you should grab all the rope you've collected from killing slimes, and then rope down until you reach the cave layer.

Don’t do what I did and choose a medium-sized world. Small worlds are best for Skyblock.

Here, you can build another long path going out in either direction, from whatever block you have the most of. Cloud is good here, as you basically have infinite clouds, from the Cloud Slimes that spawn up above. Dirt is probably not as good, but it can be used in a pinch.

Once you've built a nice, long platform, you’ll see that now wood and stone slimes will begin to spawn. Kill a couple of these Stone Slimes, and you will have enough to build a furnace. You can then use this furnace to smelt all of your ores and make some proper equipment.

How to Increase Life

You might be thinking, “Am I doomed to have 100hp forever?” I was thinking the same thing. But to put it simply… You must go deeper.

Don’t forget that your banners are in a different menu, next to the crafting menu. Once you kill 50 of any enemy, you’ll get a banner which allows you to do significantly more damage to them once placed.

Beneath the cave layer, you’ll discover a darker background, which is the start of the Cavern layer. Similar but different. Once more, different enemies will spawn down here, including the Heart Slime. This slime, while having a good bit more HP than the rest and significant restoration abilities, will kindly drop you a Life Crystal upon defeat.

You’ll also find Marble and Granite Slimes here, which give their respective drops, allowing you to make more biomes.

If you’re ever wondering how to do something in this game mode, chances are you’ll have to receive a drop from a slime and then build your own biome. It can certainly be tedious at times, but it’s really rewarding when your world gets going!
