How to Solve the Treasure Map Puzzle in Paranormasight: The Mermaid’s Curse

Paranormasight: The Mermaid’s Curse is a visual novel by Square Enix that presents a mystery for the player to solve and features several puzzles where you must perform specific actions, dig through files for information, and pay close attention to dialogue and details to figure out your next move.

One such moment occurs in the chapter Treasure Hunt - Part 1, portrayed by Arnav Barnum, where the characters are analyzing the items they have gathered so far.

Among them is a treasure map that belonged to Avi’s grandmother, which apparently points to a hidden treasure left by real mermaids. However, the map lacks the classic "X" marking the spot, leaving the player to discover the exact location on their own – a task that can be quite challenging. So here’s a quick guide to help you solve it!

Solving the Treasure Map Riddle in Paranormasight: The Mermaid’s Curse

During the Treasure Hunt - Part 1 chapter, Avi and Circe are tasked with finding the treasure’s location on an old map.

So, first, let’s go through what the map is presenting: it has a few dots on the back (you can check that by flipping it over), and bears the cryptic instruction in the front (a quote that says “search the 95th”).

With that in mind, some part of the answer is actually featured in Avi’s previous chapter, Discovering the Mermaids of Ise Bay, where they talk about stars and a specific constellation: the Summer Triangle constellation (which is real, by the way, and you can Google it).

You don’t need to replay that chapter or anything, just check its information on the Files menu to refresh your mind. By doing that, you will notice that all three stars that compose the Summer Triangle constellation look strangely familiar – they look a lot like the dots on the back of the map!

Next, talk to Circe to learn that the phrase "search the 95th" refers to a specific entry in the files about Ise. Open the menu, go to Files, and select The Tales of Ise. Scroll down to find the entry for Episode 95, Hikoboshi and give it a read. It is a love story where a man proclaims his love for a woman using Hikoboshi as a reference – and Hikoboshi is another name for Altair, one of the stars in the Summer Triangle constellation.

With this in mind, pick up the map again. You can move Avi’s arms while he holds the map, so point it toward the light source in the room (the spot on the ceiling). This will make the dots on the back visible through the front of the paper!

Now, all you need to do is select the dot at the bottom of the map, which corresponds to the star Hikoboshi, and also write Hikoboshi when the game asks you to enter the name of the location. And there you go! Avi's map now has a proper treasure mark, and you can proceed with the story.
