Laurence is an avid writer, gamer, and traveller with several years of journalistic writing experience under his belt. Having helped create a student-focused magazine at university, he is keen to reach the gaming community with his guides and game reviews.

Whether it's trudging through the world of Elden Ring, or grinding out raids in Old School Runescape, Laurence is always up for a challenge. However, in real life, his current challenge is learning how to speak Spanish and cooking authentic Mexican cuisine.

If you’ve played a few runs of Mewgenics, you’ll quickly realise that this is a rather enormous game. That percentage completion number on the save file screen is pretty intimidating, I have to say!

Not only does this complex Roguelike have multiple zones, but it also has multiple chapters, each with its own bosses and unique areas. It can be a bit mindboggling to wrap your head around, but once you start getting into the flow, you’ll realise just how amazing it is. Honestly, this game can begin to suck your life away… in a good way, of course!

DualShockers compiled a list of several challenging and fun strategy games with deceptively complex roguelike mechanics.

So let’s see how to unlock the second chapter of Mewgenics, the Desert, and take a quick peek at what that arid wasteland has in store for us!

The Multiple Paths of Chapter 1

The way Mewgenics works is that you start off in a single area, progressing on the path towards the area boss. This path splits into normal and hard, but you’ll still arrive at the boss no matter which path you take.

After defeating this area boss, the path will once again split, with each trail leading into a new zone. For example, in Chapter 1, you’ll have the choice of heading into the Sewers or the Junkyard.

These second zones won’t split into any more areas, with each having its own final destination, in this case being the Boneyard after the Junkyard, and the Caves after the Sewers.

After reaching the 3rd area, you will face the final boss and then head home with everything you gathered along the way. Or if you died, you can feed your cats to the odd fellow who stole your name.

If you want to unlock the Desert, you’ll have to defeat both Dybbuk, the backflipping cat at the end of the Boneyard, and Spinnerette, the spider boss at the end of the caves. Only once you’ve killed them both and head home will Act 2 unlock.

There is a 4th zone called the Throbbing Domain, related to those fleshy growths you see after the final area boss, but this isn’t required for unlocking Act 2.

The Desert

Thankfully, once you’ve unlocked Act 2, you don’t have to go through the entirety of Act 1 to get there. Instead, you can start a new run and select the Desert for your new adventure route.

Your team will start heading west instead of east, and you’ll quickly see that your cats are now suffering from desert heat. This heat means that they won’t heal at the end of the round, unless you find a way to get them wet.

You can use water abilities, like Surf from the Mage or simply buy a Water bottle from one of the vendors found along the adventure path. The desert is a pretty big step up in terms of difficulty, so you’ll need to start breeding your cats properly in order to tackle the next areas.

As weird as it sounds, mutations are amazing here, so look for furniture with the mutation tag. Free stat boosts will make your cats so much more powerful throughout each run.

After completing the Desert area, you’ll unlock the Crater and the Bunker.
