Laurence is an avid writer, gamer, and traveller with several years of journalistic writing experience under his belt. Having helped create a student-focused magazine at university, he is keen to reach the gaming community with his guides and game reviews.
Whether it's trudging through the world of Elden Ring, or grinding out raids in Old School Runescape, Laurence is always up for a challenge. However, in real life, his current challenge is learning how to speak Spanish and cooking authentic Mexican cuisine.
Mewgenics is a long game; there’s no denying that. You’re going to have to do rather a lot of runs before you truly start understanding the core mechanics that bind everything together. Turn order, breeding tactics, furniture placement, complementary elemental abilities, understanding enemy AI, it’s all pretty baffling at the start.
And of course, this is all before the actual bosses themselves, who can deal a ridiculous amount of damage and totally destroy that party you thought was going to be the God team! However, once everything clicks, Mewgenics becomes one of the most satisfying, deep and layered roguelikes you’ve ever played, with multiple acts and so many areas with so much replayability.
If you thought Act 1 was big, then Act 3 is going to seem like a million miles off. But of course, if I can get there, then so can you. So let’s take a look at how to get to Act 3 and what The Lab has in store for us.
Getting Through Act 2
Desert
If you’ve gotten through the first act, then it won’t come as a great surprise to learn that to unlock Act 3, you need to have beaten both final areas of Act 2.
However, this is by no means an easy feat. If you struggled with the bosses and areas of Act 1, then this is going to seriously test you.
In the first area, you’ll deal with the harsh desert heat, which prevents you from healing at the end of the battle, unless you’re wet and hydrated. Not only are the basic enemies more deadly, but they’re more complicated too, making you have to focus more on your stat allocation and positioning.
Crater & The Moon
From the Desert, you can either head to the Crater of the Bunker. In the Crater, you’ll deal with all sorts, from mutated plants to strange alien weather conditions, culminating in a fight against the Crater Maker.
From there, you’ll head up to the moon, where you’ll deal with bizarre aliens, new terrain mechanics and, ultimately, The Man in the Moon.
Bunker & The Core
Conversely, you can choose the Bunker option and head down into a nuclear testing facility, full of toxic waste and mutated abominations. You’ll find Johnny here, the final boss.
After this, you can continue downwards, heading down into the core, which is essentially Hell. Expect fire, brimstone and evil incantations aplenty. Eventually, you will fight against the Coven, where you’ll have to disrupt a ritual and defeat the Tormentor.
If you're struggling against the Coven, try destroying all the candles before you touch the actual boss. This will drastically reduce the power of the Tormentor.
The Lab
After Dr Beanies is kicked out of his lab, it will be open for exploration. Naturally, this area is full of bizarre and twisted creations that just love to inflict all manner of status conditions on you and your team, so watch out.
Once you reach the end of the Lab, you will be pitted against either Stacy or Spewer. While Act 3 does continue to either the Ice Age or The Future, you’ll first have to repair the time machine that gets you there.
To do this, you need to retrieve the heart of the Throbbing King in the Throbbing Domain at the end of Act 1. Once you have this, you can repair the time machine and continue on to chapter 2 of Act 3.
