The beginning of your journey in Tales of Seikyu brings you to a renowned fox village that's inhabited by a variety of friendly (and some not so friendly) Yokai spirits. As you grow and expand your farmhouse deep in the hills of Seikyu island, you'll get to know each of those Yokais over the course of the story. As cool as they are, you'll likely wish at some point that you could embody some mystical Yokai forms yourself.
As it turns out, you actually can. There are several Yokai forms you can unlock in the game by collecting their respective masks and scrolls hidden deep in the island's ruins. Not only that, these Yokai forms can give you some truly powerful abilities to turn the tide in just about any battle against the island's fiercest monsters, or simply make farming at home a good bit easier. With that, here's how to unlock and use every Yokai form in Tales of Seikyu.
What Are Yokai Forms in Tales of Seikyu?
In Tales of Seikyu, as a fox, you have the innate ability to take the form of various types of Yokai, which refers to spirit creatures commonly found in Japanese folklore. While your default form for much of the story is a human, and thus you'll be conducting a good bit of your adventures as one, your true form that you seek to rediscover is that of a fox. You'll need to unlock several other Yokai forms before you can obtain it, but once you do, it's well worth the effort.
As elaborated further below, each of these unique Yokai forms come with their own set of skills that you can use to overcome challenges in places such as the Fox Ruins, or reach previously inaccessible areas that you couldn't as a human on foot. This means unlocking all of them is essential to your journey, and luckily, you'll do so as part of the main storyline.
How to Unlock and Upgrade All Yokai Forms in Tales of Seikyu
There's a total of 6 different Yokai forms your character can unlock and use in Tales of Seikyu. You'll unlock each of them over the course of the story, particularly by traversing and clearing rooms in the cave dungeon beneath the Fox Ruins, and each one has its own unique uses in and out of combat.
Also, most of the Yokai forms have opportunities to upgrade their combat attacks. Select one of your unlocked Yokais in the 'Forms' menu to view their details and respective upgrade tree (on the right side of the screen). To complete an upgrade, you'll need a specific amount of money along with Talismans, which you can earn by clearing rooms in the underground cave dungeon at the Fox Ruins north of Seikyu town.
Note that while there aren't any specific abilities to unlock for it, you can still upgrade your default Human form as well, which will allow you to equip high-level weapons.
Human Form
- How to Unlock: This is your default form at the start of the game and main story, so there are no requirements to unlock it.
- How to Use: N/A; Your human form uses traditional weapons and gear for combat and survivability.
- Maximum Upgrade Level: There are no specific upgrades to unlock for your human form. Only your default character level applies here.
Boar Form
- How to Unlock: Once you unlock your first Shrine across the bridge from Seikyu town as part of the main story, your character will transform into a boar as part of the cutscene sequence. This will automatically unlock this Yokai form for you to use going forward.
- How to Use: Boar Form can be used in combat and also to sow soil patches on your farm in order to plant crops.
- Maximum Upgrade Level: 8
Slime Form
- How to Unlock: Defeat Anji, the Tanuki boss, inside the Fox Ruins cave dungeon. You'll receive the transformation scroll as a reward afterward.
- How to Use: This form can be used to explore underwater areas around the island to obtain loot. It can also be used to water all crops on your farm at the same time by taking water from nearby sources such as rivers and ponds. Finally, it can be used in combat to shoot projectile attacks at monsters.
- Maximum Upgrade Level: 8
Tengu Form
- How to Unlock: Defeat the second Tanuki boss in the Fox Ruins cave dungeon named Fujiki. You'll receive a transformation scroll to unlock the form afterward.
- How to Use: This form can be used to glide to high points around the island that you can't otherwise reach by foot. In combat, it can be used defensively to block and/or evade attacks from monsters.
- Maximum Upgrade Level: 8
Yuki-Onna Form
- How to Unlock: Obtained in the Fox Ruins cave dungeon after unlocking Boar, Slime, and Tengu. You'll receive a transformation scroll to unlock the form afterward.
- How to Use: This form can be used to reach otherwise inaccessible areas on the island. It can also be used in combat by wielding ice-based attacks.
- Maximum Upgrade Level: 8
Fox Form
- How to Unlock: This is the final Yokai form you can unlock in the game (currently), and normally cannot be done until you've obtained all previous forms (Human, Boar, Slime, Tengu, and Yuki-Onna).
You can actually get this form super early (unless it gets patched)! Go through the first main hallway from the cave entrance until you reach a room straight ahead with a waterfall across a gap. Use your Boar form to sprint and jump across the gap to the waterfall ledge, open the treasure chest there (contains Sun Wheel Ring), then carefully maneuver behind the waterfall and go down the next hall until you reach a room with another chest at the top of an elevated platform to your left. Open it, and this gives you the scroll to unlock the Fox form!
- How to Use: This form can be used to tame monsters, and upgrading the form will allow you to tame them more easily, and includes elite monsters as well.
- Maximum Upgrade Level: 8
