Covering the video games industry since 2017, with experience in news, articles, lists, and reviews (and I blame The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask for that).

If you are a fan of RPGs and want a third-person version: Tayná Garcia is a Brazilian journalist (but you can call her Tay) who ended up working with video games after finishing Zelda: Majora's Mask when she was a kid. With more than eight years of experience in the segment, she has been an assistant editor at Jovem Nerd in the past and is currently a contributor at DualShockers and a writer for gaming magazines for Editora Europa. Oh, and she may like Hideo Kojima a bit too much.

If you’re a fan of movies like The Terminator, Die Hard, and Escape from New York, and you also live for high-octane gameplay, then this news was written specifically for you!

That’s because the studio Easy Trigger Games and publisher Coffee Stain teamed up this Thursday to officially pull back the curtain on Huntdown: Overtime, a “blood-soaked roguelite” that promises to deliver one of the most action-packed experiences of 2026.

For starters, if the name sounds familiar, it is because Huntdown: Overtime is actually a prequel to the cult classic Huntdown.

This new entry serves as a love letter to the VHS-era action classics, putting you back in the boots of John Sawyer. However, this time, the story focuses on his pivotal and brutal transformation, and players will experience firsthand exactly how he evolved from a battered bounty hunter into the cybernetic killing machine fans remember.

A narrow corridor is fine when you're shooting in a straight line.

With handcrafted 16-bit pixel art (that, yes, looks as awesome as it sounds) and fast-paced run-and-gun combat, the game aims to capture that specific “grindhouse” grit we all love while evolving the series into something even more relentless and replayable than its predecessor.

And it has some modern roguelite elements in order to do that, meaning you will face quite a linear structure overall with procedurally varied runs and permanent cybernetic upgrades that you unlock as you progress.

This combination turns every failure into a step toward becoming a killing machine and makes “death” an important part of the game. Each failed run sends Sawyer back to the operating table, where his flesh is replaced with steel, carving away weaknesses through permanent upgrades and equipment, such as firearms, melee weapons, and tactical gear. So that you can be fully ready for the next run!

Oh, and whether you are a veteran of the first game or a newcomer looking for some mayhem, this prequel is designed as the best entry point you could look for.

This new entry basically serves as a love letter to the VHS-era action classics, putting you back in the boots of John Sawyer.

"Overtime is a very different game from the original Huntdown," explained Art Director Tommy Gustafsson in a press release. "We've tried to capture that relentless, forward-momentum gunplay from classic action movies and modern ones like John Wick. Then we added a massive arsenal, cybernetic upgrades that reshape your playstyle, and wrapped it in a roguelite loop. The result is something we hope captures the badass spirit of 80s cinema while giving you a reason to keep hunting run after run.”

Hearing that the team is blending the golden age of action cinema with the intensity of John Wick has us totally sold! And not to mention that it is quite clear already that Huntdown: Overtime is built on that “badass spirit” of the early 80s, prioritizing a replayable experience that emphasizes growth through grit, meaning plenty of hours of fun.

And the best part is that players won't have to wait much longer to begin their transformation, as the game is set to launch in Early Access on Steam later in 2026, and we will probably hear much more from the developers at Easy Trigger Games in the coming months.
