The creative minds behind inventive action-adventure games Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian fully revealed their next project at Summer Game Fest on Friday: gen Atlas, a single-player, open-world, action-adventure set on an abandoned planet.
gen Atlas is the first full game from GenDesign, the studio founded by Fumito Ueda after he left Sony and Team Ico in 2011, while The Last Guardian was still in development. gen Atlas was previously revealed under the title Project Robot and teased with a moody, two-minute trailer at The Game Awards 2024. The project was first hinted at as far back as 2020, when GenDesign signed a deal with Epic Games to publish the forthcoming game.
In a news release, GenDesign described the mystery surrounding its new action-adventure game: "Without knowing why, you awaken on an abandoned planet," the studio said of gen Atlas' setting. Before you lies a vast, silent world. Colossal structures stretch over endless plains, deserted facilities, and an ever-changing sea. The remnants of some grand design litter the planet’s surface.
"As you journey deeper into this strange world, a colossal robot awaits. Its overwhelming power opens paths to places once beyond reach, transforming your conception of the world. Across an endless expanse of time, the remnants of those forgotten constructs begin to move once more..."
Fumito Ueda, CEO and creative director of GenDesign, said in a statement that with gen Atlas, "We hope to share an experience that inspires moments of quiet wonder and discovery.”
gen Atlas does not have a release date, but it's slated to launch on PlayStation 5, Windows PC (via the Epic Games Store), and Xbox Series X.
