Timothée Chalamet and Selena Gomez are set to star

Selen Gomez's character in Not Alone stands in a sci-fi room

Universal Pictures has released the first trailer for Illumination's next animated feature, Not Alone. The movie was first announced last week during the 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival. The trailer depicts Timothée Chalamet (Dune, Marty Supreme) and Selena Gomez (Only Murders in the Building) as two rocket scientists falling in love.

While this is technically a teaser trailer, it offers nearly three minutes of footage that set the stage for the star-bound romance. Chalamet, in his first feature-length animated movie, voices Joe, an introverted rocket mechanic who lives a quiet life alone. Gomez plays Fran, an astro-botanist developing a plant-fueled rocket.

Not Alone's teaser makes a great first impression. The acting chops of Chalamet and Gomez do quite a lot of heavy lifting as their dynamic makes the budding feelings between Joe and Fran seem like a solid anchor to the film. The movie's official synopsis is as follows:

When Joe and Fran are brought together to prepare for the inaugural launch of this revolutionary rocket, there are immediate sparks, but neither is particularly adept at romance. Life becomes more complicated when three aliens—tiny, unruly and adorable—take refuge in Joe’s home. Dunk, Welly and Shirm are on the interplanetary run from a zealous-yet-inept officer of the law named Zandro. The aliens determine that Fran’s rocket could provide their means of getting back home to safety.

The aliens Dunk, Welly, and Shirm are voiced by British comedians Rob Brydon, Diane Morgan, and Jamie Demetriou respectively. Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso, Office Romance) voices Zandro. The supporting cast is rounded out by the likes of Allison Janney (The Diplomat, Ten Things I Hate About You), and Lamorne Morris (Fargo, Spider-Noir). Not Alone is co-directed by Eric Guillon (who served as co-director on Despicable Me 3), Claire Dodgson (editor on The Lorax and Minions), and Jonathan Del Val (co-director of The Secret Life of Pets 2). Producing duties are being handled by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri as well as executive producers Joy Poirel, Richard Curtis, and David Distenfeld.

Illumination is best known as the animation studio behind huge franchises like the Minions, Despicable Me, and Sing. The studio also made both 2023's The Super Mario Bros. Movie and this year's sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. When the sequel released this April, it had the biggest opening weekend of any movie in 2026 (at that time). It is currently the highest grossing movie of 2026 at the worldwide box office, having grossed over $1billion.

Not Alone will be released in theaters April 2027.
