The Call of Duty franchise routinely places highly in annual best-seller categories with each new entry in the FPS franchise, but there are some fans that are also ready for something fresh.

In recent years, dedicated COD players have been asking for Activision, Treyarch, Raven Software, and Infinity Ward to do something different and innovative for the series to shake it up a bit. Call of Duty: Warzone remains popular, but there has also been some belief that it needs some new, exciting shake-ups as well.

Marathon Season 2 is jam-packed with new content including the new defensive shell, Sentinel, a new mode, and major changes to the progression system.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Call of Duty: Vanguard, and 2023's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III all featured campaigns that weren't as well-received as some other classics in the franchise, so many are hoping to see a bit of a return to form with Modern Warfare 4, which serves as the next installment in one of the series' most beloved iterations.

Now it seems like Infinity Ward has heard the fans' pleas and is doing something new with their next COD game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, which is slated to launch on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch 2 on Friday, October 23rd later this year.

Here's what we know so far.

The New Direction of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4

Ever since Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and it's two direct sequels launched to record-breaking sales and critical acclaim in the late 2000s, Activision has strived to repeat that level of success, resulting in the MW trilogy being rebooted with 2019's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

While 2019's MW did feature several new elements and characters that helped revitalize the COD franchise at the time, the rest of the reboot MW trilogy wound up feeling fairly familiar to the events of the original games.

Modern Warfare III wound end up being especially disappointing for many fans due to how short and repetitive Modern Warfare III's campaign was in terms of gameplay and how its story retconned events from Modern Warfare II, such as Commander Philip Graves being revealed to be alive.

However, it seems like Infinity Ward is now beginning to innovate on the MW saga by releasing a proper Modern Warfare 4 that introduces brand-new threats, settings, characters, and arcs for pre-established MW characters. This is reason to be excited.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is centered around North Korea invading South Korea and threatening to destabilize the world, with a group of young South Korean soldiers struggling to survive amid North Korea's sudden attacks and form a proper counteroffensive using trench warfare.

Meanwhile, the other half of the campaign follows the legendary Captain John Price on a globe-trotting off-book mission across New York, Paris, Mumbai, and other locations as he comes into conflict with members of his old squad, including Lieutenant Simon "Ghost" Riley, and forces tied to North Korea's invasion.

Only a bit of Modern Warfare's campaign has been shown so far, but it has already proven to be one of the most dark and intriguing COD titles, let alone MW games, in years due to how it will take Price and other classic MW characters in entirely new directions and Activision's boldness to feature North Korea as an antagonistic force.

Not much of Modern Warfare 4's multiplayer has been detailed, but its new iteration of DMZ will be shown in over a week on Sunday, June 7th, during the Xbox Games Showcase 2026.

Modern Warfare 4's multiplayer has the potential to go in several new directions as well, especially with MW4 being the first COD game to debut on a Nintendo console in 13 years, with it potentially having crossplay with other platforms, a first for Nintendo COD titles.

As more details continue to be revealed about MW4 in the coming weeks and months, it'll be interesting to see what exciting and new directions this latest installment of the franchise chooses to go in.
