Eclipse Glow Games has announced that award-winning British actress Jennifer English, best known for playing the role of Shadowheart in Baldur's Gate 3 by Larian Studios, and Maelle in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 by Sandfall Interactive, will no longer feature in the upcoming Tides of Annihilation game.

Jennifer English has been highly commended for her work, earning the BAFTA Games Award for Best Performer in a Leading Role, winning the Best Performance at The Game Awards 2025, and picking up the accolade for Best Performer at the Golden Joystick Awards, all for her performance as Maelle in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

Tides of Annihilation was set to be English’s next major role, but she has left the role citing health issues. However, she is eager to continue supporting the title, just in an alternate way from what fans would expect.

Jennifer English’s Role in Tides of Annihilation

In a post on the official Tides of Annihilation X account, fans were informed that the decision was taken in June by Jennifer English to step away from the role of English voice actor for Gwendolyn, the main protagonist in Tides of Annihilation, “due to personal health reasons.” Since then, she has continued supporting the game in an “advisory role.” English has also assisted the team behind the upcoming game in finding alternate candidates to play the role of Gwendolyn that remains true to the character the developers are trying to portray.

A new voice actress, whose name has yet to be revealed, is recording Gwendolyn’s voice lines, which will debut for the first time in the Gamescom 2026 hands-on demo this August. The demo is expected to provide a glimpse of the game’s branching paths, allowing you to give the combat a whirl, and of course, explore the eerie yet beautiful world.

If you aren’t attending Gamescom, official updates will be shared across Tides of Annihilation’s social media during the time the event is running, which will involve Gwendolyn's new voice actress.

In an Instagram story posted on Jennifer English’s official account, English reiterates her support for Tides of Annihilation and outlines her personal situation:

Tides of an Annihilation is a fantasy action-adventure that takes place in a dilapidated version of London. Taking on the role of Gwendolyn, the city’s last surviving inhabitant, you must push back against its supernatural enemies while traversing a winding world where reality and fantasy combine to piece together a way to save the city.

Not only is the narrative inspired by Arthurian legend, but so is the combat. Expect to control a team of over ten knights, each wielding unique skills and abilities. These powers can be combined to personalize your strategies and pull off impressive attacks together as a team.

The over 150 developers that make up Eclipse Glow Games have previously worked on other high-profile games, such as the Yakuza series, Assassin’s Creed games, and even Persona, among others.

Tides of Annihilation doesn’t yet have a release date. When it does make its debut, it will be playable on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. In the meantime, you can look forward to a new Tides of Annihilation trailer, debuting at Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25, 2026.
