Suzanne Collins wants to use Hunger Games to fix our media literacy problem

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is already one of the hottest anticipated films of 2026. Even more so now that The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson will be making an appearance as their characters, Katniss and Peeta.

Lawrence and Hutcherson first appeared as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark in the 2012 film, The Hunger Games. Directed by Gary Ross and adapted from Suzanne Collins' dystopian novel franchise of the same name, the film follows Katniss' journey after she volunteers to take part in a televised competition that pits teens against one another in a fight for survival.

Sunrise on the Reaping, Collins' newest novel that was released in March this year, is set in Panem on the morning of the 50th Hunger Games — a whole 24 years before the events that would lead Katniss and Peeta to become symbols of hope and rebellion. It is also the sequel to 2023's The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, which featured an all-star cast including Rachel Zegler, Tom Blyth, and Hunter Schafer.

No further details about Lawrence and Hutchinson's roles in Sunrise on the Reaping were confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, aside from the fact that the two actors would be reprising their roles as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark. Given everything we know so far about the film, and how, last we saw, Katniss and Peeta were married and had children, we speculate that their appearances are likely to be flashforward events. We highly doubt they'll appear in the same era as a younger Haymitch Abernathy (Joseph Zada), who serves as the protagonist in Sunrise on the Reaping.

Regardless of how and where we'll see Katniss and Peeta, we're eager to see Lawrence and Hutcherson return to a franchise they helped bring to the silver screen. We'll find out more about their inclusion in Sunrise on the Reaping when it debuts in theaters on Nov. 20, 2026.
