From meme to Shonen Jump’s next hyped action series, Takeru Hokazono’s manga Kagurabachi has already been on a wild ride, and its anime adaptation isn’t even out yet. Ahead of its April 2027 premiere, the show’s production committee released the first character visual and trailer for series protagonist Chihiro Rokuhira.
For those unfamiliar, Kagurabachi is a revenge story. After a group of elite sorcerers cuts down Chihiro's father and steals six of the enchanted swords he created, the young man sets out on the path of revenge to reclaim these blades. While the manga’s significant hype made it the subject of widespread jokes when it debuted, the series has since (mostly) turned perceptions around. The manga began in 2023 in Weekly Shonen Jump and has been compiled into 11 volumes, with 4 million copies in circulation.
Cypic (formerly CygamesPictures) is adapting the anime. The studio was founded in 2016 and has since put out an impressive run of adaptations, such as the harrowing queer horror series The Summer Hikaru Died and the sports story spectacle of Umamusume: Cinderella Gray, alongside big-swing originals, like Apocalypse Hotel and Brave Bang Bravern. In particular, the studio’s recent film, Umamusume: Pretty Derby — Beginning of a New Era features such spectacular animation that viewers may even suspend disbelief about its absurd horse girls concept.
As for Kagurabachi’s staff, the show will be directed by industry veteran Tetsuya Takeuchi (key animation for Jujutsu Kaisen, etc., episode director for Heavenly Delusion, director of the underrated comedy From Bureaucrat to Villainess: Dad’s Been Reincarnated!). Keigo Sasaki is handling character designs (Umamusume: Cinderella Gray), and Rokuhira will be voiced by Taihi Kimura.
Image: Takeru Hokazono/Shueisha/Project KagurabachiWhile the show won’t officially release until April, the first 20 minutes of its premiere will be screened early as part of the Kagurabachi World Tour. The show will be previewed at Anime Expo in Los Angeles, Japan Expo Paris, AnimagiC in Germany, and Anime NYC.
