It seems the time has officially come for us to simply walk into Mordor once again! Warhorse Studios, the minds behind the Kingdom Come: Deliverance series, has finally put an end to the rumor mill by confirming they are working on an open-world RPG set in Middle-earth, meaning that The Lord of the Rings is returning to the gaming world.

While there are few exact replicas of Kingdom Come: Deliverance, there are certainly a handful of games that can get the job done.

Not only that, but the Czech developer dropped a double whammy by revealing that this isn't their only active project: a brand-new adventure within the Kingdom Come universe is also actively in development.

According to the studio’s official social media channels, both titles are being developed concurrently. “You might have heard the rumours, it's time to reveal what we are working on,” the statement reads. “An open world Middle-earth RPG [and] a new Kingdom Come adventure. We’re excited to tell you more when the time is right.”

While the post was brief, the accompanying teaser image featuring both logos (you can check them out right above) hid a few fascinating details in plain sight.

For starters, explicitly calling it a “Middle-earth RPG” rather than a direct The Lord of the Rings tie-in sounds like a very deliberate choice of words. This suggests Warhorse might be exploring the vast lore of J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium, untethered from the specific narrative of the main books or film trilogies.

Meanwhile, the second logo noticeably lacks the word “Deliverance” or a traditional “3,” hinting that this new Kingdom Come project could be a spin-off or a fresh perspective rather than a continuation (of some sort) of Henry’s personal journey.

That’s basically it, and the Czech studio made it clear that more details regarding both projects will be shared when the time is right. But let’s be entirely honest here: as much as I love Henry and the historical realism of Bohemia, the Middle-earth project completely steals the spotlight now! Look at what The Lord of the Rings fans have been fed lately – between the underwhelming crafting loops of Return to Moria and the critical disaster that was Gollum, Tolkien’s universe has been desperately starved for a brand-new gaming experience.

And Warhorse simply doesn't know how to play it safe. They excel at building worlds with an uncompromising and breathtaking attention to detail, without any fear of pulling off challenging ideas. Applying that design philosophy to Middle-earth is a prospect that many, until now, thought wouldn’t even be possible! Don't get me wrong, more Kingdom Come is great, but an open-world RPG where we can experience the sheer scale of Tolkien's world through Warhorse's immersive lens? Sorry, Henry, but that’s literally what we’ve been waiting years for – and we didn't even know it.
