Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, and Persona stole the show at Summer Game Fest 2026

From Final Fantasy 7 Revelation to Kingdom Hearts 4, JRPG fans are about to have a feast

With the last Nintendo Direct on June 9, we wrapped up a whole week of announcements and events focused on the upcoming months of gaming. While the spotlight seemed dominated by names like God of War Laufey, and Gears of War: E-Day, the real winners of this event season have been the JRPG fans. We now have a lineup to look forward to that is as impressive and exciting as we once saw in the PlayStation 2's golden age.

Up until now, 2026 has been a slow year for new JRPGs. Trails Beyond the Horizon finally came out in the West, we explored the cute doll-like world of Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined, and we hatched eggs in Monster Hunter Stories 3. Sure there were other releases, like the Utawarerumono: Past and Present Rediscovered, and there were future games to be excited about, like The Adventures of Elliot and (eventually) Dragon Quest 12. However, all it took was the end of this year's Summer Game Fest showcase, with the first trailer and release date of the third game in the Final Fantasy 7 remake project, to open the gates to JRPG heaven.

Throughout the last seven days, we saw: Square Enix’s extensive look at Final Fantasy 7 Revelation; Sega finally announcing the Persona 4 Revival release date and confirming Persona 6 is in development; and Nintendo sharing the release date of Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave, a glimpse of the new Xenoblade game, the not-so-new Final Fantasy Resonance, and a lengthy look at Kingdom Hearts 4, finally appeasing the distressed fans who have been waiting years for news. To make the next months look even better for JRPG fans, we'll also have Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter arriving in September, Tales of Eternia Remastered in October, and Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World in December.

Sure, there are too many games to play already — even more so if we consider different genres. Among them, the ones coming out in the second half of 2026 will be competing amongst themselves to escape GTA 6. Even if we can manage to start some of these games once they come out, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will be waiting right around the corner. Even so, the future seems bright for JRPG fans.

The current lineup of upcoming games makes me feel like I'm back to the early 2000s when the PlayStation 2 had two mainline Final Fantasy games, Persona 3 FES and Persona 4, Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, and the Xenosaga trilogy. It’s a moment in gaming history where ideas and trends have been established.

All these announcements are the food an endlessly hungry community needs. In recent years, the genre has steadily grown with players getting into the established series like Persona — which just recently reached the mark of 30 million copies sold worldwide — to discovering new series because of games like Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter and Digimon Story: Time Stranger. But now, with a new Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, and Persona game on the horizon, I can only see the genre growing stronger.

We can't ignore that all of these long-running series have laid the foundations for many of the genre's aesthetic conventions. The prospect of having all of them coming back around the same time is an event capable of making waves for many years to come. In other words, we might be coming closer to another golden age of JRPGs.
