Baldur's Gate 3 was a massive success by all standards of gaming, and Hasbro confirmed on a podcast with The Game Business that the company is now spending one billion dollars on single-player Dungeons and Dragons games to keep the hype alive. The podcast interview also confirmed that Hasbro wants to make Baldur's Gate 4, which isn't a surprise as the company says that BG3 was lucrative for them.

Of course, creating another game as successful as BG3 would be difficult in the best circumstances, and Hasbro has been working with a disadvantage from the beginning. Development team Larian won over players with BG3, but has decided that the studio wants to shift to other projects instead of working on BG4, leaving Hasbro in the position of needing to find the right studio for the project.

The problem here is that Larian did so well with creating BG3 that DnD content is now being created based on the game. I loved BG3, and it would be ideal for Larian to keep making DnD games for Hasbro, including BG4, but not limited to the Baldur's Gate series.

I have no doubt that many other players feel the same way, especially since playing BG3 made a number of people seek out Larian's previous games to try out because it was just that good. Larian has the trust of the players, and that's difficult to earn in the gaming industry's current climate.

Larian Studios will enter a media blackout for the foreseeable future as they work on their next game.

While I imagine everybody has their own opinions about which studio should be approached by Hasbro, I would personally love to see other studios that have created story-rich games as the top choices. ZA/UM, the devs behind Disco Elysium, would be great to see chosen, but Kojima's studio also makes story-rich games, and a DnD game designed by him would be wild. I'd be so there for it.

Hasbro Might Not Know What It's Looking For in a Team

Hasbro recently canceled one of the in-progress DnD games it was creating with Giant Skull, the team that created the Jedi Fallen Order games, which could indicate that the company isn't entirely sure what it wants its post-Larian era to look like. Assuming part of the billion dollars the company is investing in single-player games went to this project prior to that cancellation, then there won't be any return on that investment.

Repeatedly starting and canceling games could create a worrying pattern for Hasbro. However, there's a solution that could be the best option for Hasbro that the company doesn't seem to have explored yet, but it could be high risk for a high reward.

The game industry has faced layoffs numbering in the thousands in recent years, and many of these experienced workers are still looking for a new role in gaming. Hasbro has the resources to create its own in-house game development team. This would allow Hasbro to craft a team filled with members who have the exact experience that's needed for story-rich single-player games set in the various DnD worlds.

It also ensures that Hasbro always has a team to work with, and if that team builds the level of trust that Larian has from players, then you basically guarantee the success of the games.

Hasbro has the resources to create its own in-house game development team.

For the sake of the talented developers left looking for work in a hiring climate that doesn't favor them, I would love for Hasbro to go with the in-house team route. It would be a big investment to get started, but Hasbro is clearly willing to make an investment in gaming after the success of Baldur's Gate 3. With that in mind, Hasbro's post-Larian era could greatly benefit from the creation of an in-house team, but we'll see how this all plays out.
